First a big thank you to all for the valuable information that has allowed me to have a pool requiring very little effort (or $$) to maintain water balance. The salt water pool guidelines work! I buy MA, CYA and Salt as needed - nothing else.

Throughout May and June, pH maintained a very steady 7.6 (BTW, it's the first time it ever held this long without adding MA and we're now in our 4th season). I think I found the TA sweet spot for my pool at between 60-70. However beginning the first week of July, I'm adding MA every few days to knock it back. I test (nearly) daily and keep a log including water temp. Looking over the log, trying to determine why suddenly pH is on the rise, I noticed the water temp throughout the second half of May and all of June averaged ~82F. July MTD average is ~89F!! All other numbers are fairly steady (again thanks to TFP and a good test kit).

I look back over last year's log and see a similar spike in MA usage beginning in July and throughout August.

Usage is up a bit with the hotter weather, but we had some high use weekends in May and June with no impact to pH. So is it the warmer water temp? The pool gets direct sunlight nearly all day! Anyway no real concern here just an observation.

Do you add more fill water to your pool in July and August? What is the pH and TA of your fill water?

How much more are you splashing around in the pool in July and August?

What is your current TA?

Aeration raises PH. Splashing around in the pool is aeration.

Ha! I put fill water practically every other time we use it since May 1. We'll have anywhere from 3 to 6 Golden Retrievers in the pool. They are like sponges! But 2" at the most in ~14K gallon pool shouldn't have that much impact over a few days. pH 7.7 TA 110 well water.

I was going to suggest it might be your fill water. My city's water chemistry changes throughout the year as they switch sources to meet demand. But did you say you're on a well? Still, maybe your well water has changed? How old is your fill water test results? How often do you test your fill water?

More use and splashing is definitely a contender. Could be a combination of a couple factors, and no one thing.

That's why we test the water often...

Fill water tested today. We use the well water in the spring to top off the 18" it gets lowered for winter usually have it balanced in about a week. This year we started out with pH 7.8 and TA 80. Not bad. Added MA May 3 and didnt need until Jul 5. Like you said that's why we test often.
