Pentair NO COMM

I have tried searching high and low for a solution but nothing seems to work so far. I am pretty handy but electrical is not one of those skills. I have a EasyTouch/ QuickTouch II on a pool that was built 2013/2014 by the previous owners. The breaker to the IntelliFlo VS was turned off 2 days ago after the pump was randomly going high/low and not following the schedule. The filter was taken apart and cleaned. Everything turned back on and it wasn't communicating. Yesterday, everything was working fine and the pump came on per the EasyTouch schedule. Today, No Comm again. I could manually turn on the pump because it was NOT showing "Display Not Active." At noon the "Display Not Active" reappeared and the pump turned off but the basic QuickTouch remote nor the EasyTouch control panel turn on the pump. Everything has power, the lights are on with the Intellichlor. I tried the wireless address reset but not sure how that works with an older unit. Any help would be appreciated!

Check for corrosion of the communication cable at the pump. Is the cable firmly attached to the pump?
Be sure that the end that is connected in the EZ Touch has both wires in the RS485 plug.
That's where to start.

M,

The EasyTouch uses an RS-485 com port bus.. The problem is that any device on the bus can lock the whole bus up.

Your SWCG, the IntelliFlo pump, your remote, and your main card all use the same com port. I assume you do not have ScreenLogic...

To test, disconnect your remote and the SWCG.. This means that just your pump and the main card are connected to the RS-485 bus. Put the system into Auto and Pool and see if the pump's display shows "Display not active".. If it does, I'd run it a couple of days just to make sure it stays good. If it is no longer intermittent, then I would assume one of the disconnected devices is intermittently bad.

If the connection is still intermittent, it could be the pump or the main card, no easy way to tell which.

We have seen several RS-485 cables going to the pump being bad.. The pins, either on the cable side, or the pump side, just corrode away.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I believe the communication is happening and that it's not the RS cable. I did per your comment and when I disconnected the remote I got an error on the Easy Touch screen. Disconnecting the SWCG the "Display Not Active" goes away and I can manually turn the pump on using the controls on the pump. When the Easy Touch is on auto the pool pump is not turning on "Display Not Active" present. The remote is communicating to the Easy Touch. The water feature on its own Aux will turn on and off on the panel but not actually turn on at the pool via the IntelliFlo VS.

To clarify, the SWCG doesn't seem to matter connected or not. If the Easy Touch is on Auto the pump will appear "Display Not Active." If I turn Auto off and go into service mode I can then control the pump manually. So there is definitely a communication happening just not actually signaling to turn on and off.

M,

When you go into the Service mode, the communications shut off and the pump reverts to manual operation. This is how it is supposed to work.

In your system, all the com wires are connected to the Surge card mounted to the back wall of the EasyTouch.. There is a jumper cable from the main card J20 to the J3 of Surge card.. Your pump is connected to J2 of the surge card (Just two wires as it should be) and your remote is connected to J1 of the surge card.

In your original post you show that you have no coms to the pump. You go on to say the problem is somewhat intermittent, as it sometimes works and sometimes does not work.

If this were my system I'd want to run the pump and the main card with nothing else connected and see of I could use the EasyTouch's LCD and buttons to control the pump. To do that you need to do the following...

I suggest that you remove the connector that is currently attached to J2 of the surge card (it just unplugs) and then remove the jumper cable that is currently connected to the main card J20. Then just plug the pump cable you removed from J2 into the main card J20. This would connect your pump directly to J20.. This would also disconnect the RS-485 com from your remote and from the SWCG.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Just finished doing this and still no control over the pump from the Easy Touch. I went into the IntelliFlo menu on the Easy Touch/Pump #1/Pump Type: VS and pump status now says NORMAL as before it said NO COMM. Still under Auto and the pump is displaying "Display Not Active."

M,

Are you sure your pump speeds are still there??? After things are set up, if you select VS again, it will delete all the speeds.

For the pump to run you have to have circuit on, and that circuit has to have a speed assigned.. As an example Pool = 1500 RPM..

If your pump status is Normal and the pump's display shows "Display Not Active" then the pump is talking with the EasyTouch.

Thanks,

Jim R.

You're awesome! That was it. I really appreciate the help. I didn't mess with the settings and had checked that previously. When I went in today no circuits where assigned telling the pump what RPM against the programed schedule. Any recommendations on the high and low RPMs to set? For the schedule it's only ever had Low and High set. I change the time based on the year and how long high will run to create Chlorine in the summer. Since it is VS Id imagine there is a lot opportunity to make adjustments. Again, thank you!

M,

My IntelliFlo runs 24/7, mostly at 1200 RPM.. I like making a little chlorine all the time and I like skimming all the time. I also like to see a little motion in the water. Doing this costs me less than $20 bucks a month. I also believe, without any proof, then it is better to run 24/7 than turn the pump on and off each day.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for the feedback. Any ideas on how I program the cleaner? The pool has in ground cleaning. I reprogrammed the circuit names to match each circuit. I lined up the circuit function to the correct name. I have Pool Low, Pool High, Pool Light (aux 1), Waterfall (aux 2). No other aux are used - confirmed using the remote. All pool pump functions run off of the Filter Pump button on the Easy Touch (when I hit High, Water Feature, Cleaner on the remote they are all on one Filter Pump button on the Touch panel).

My question specifically is when I go into the IntelliFlo menu through Settings and I am assigning RPM speeds. Cleaner is not an assignable option. When I hit the button on the pool remote the pump does turn on. But I can't figure out what is actually assigned to the button for cleaner. Pool Low 1200 RPM, Pool/Spa 2500 *see note below, Pool High 3250, Waterfall 1750.

*My first circuit is hard coded as Spa which I have assigned as Pool Low. I dont have a spa. See picture.

M,

Show us several pics of your equipment pad..

I am not sure what type of cleaner you have???

Is it an In Floor Cleaning System (IFCS) or do you have a Suction Cleaner, or Pressure side cleaner??

Thanks,

Jim R.

It is an in floor cleaning system. I would think there would be an option to program when that turns on. No option under Circuit Function for cleaner. Cleaner is available in the Curcuit Names along with a lot of other names. But I don't think this has much to do with the actual system operation.

M,

It appears you have one automated valve...

It also appears that the valve either sends water to the IFCS or it sends water to ???? Does that valve send water to your waterfall or back to your pool???

I "assume" waterfall.. If so, you can't turn your IFCS on and off... (Sounds like your Aux 2 is your waterfall..)

If the above is true, you can make the IFCS work or not work, but controlling your pump speed. This is where you use Feature Circuits.. Just rename a Feature Circuit "Any name you wish".. You can name it "Jim" or "Fred" or anything you want. You do not have to use the canned names from the drop down list. Then just assign a speed to whatever you call it.

Thanks,

Jim R.

You are correct that the one valve sends water to the IFCS and the Waterfall. So when the pump is on the waterfall is on. I'll have to play around with it some more to figure how to tie it all together. The options in the different menus don't match. It would be a lot easier if they did.

M,

The waterfall valve should be set so that the waterfall is off, and all the water goes into the IFCS, or the valve is open to allow the waterfall to look good while most of the water goes to the IFCS (The IFCS is also your pool returns, so you really don't want to shut it off for too long.) I would not constantly run the waterfall..

Keep in mind that a Circuit Name is just what you call it.. Naming a Circuit "Cleaner" does not make it a cleaner, it is just what you are calling it..

Thanks,

Jim R.
