Pentair Mastertemp panel keeps blinking

I just installed a new master temp 400 with initial success. The heater turned on, heated water was pumping, no gas leaks, all was well. After running for 10-15 minutes the heater panel and red heater light keeps blinking... the panel says "version 2.0" then turns off, turns back on and does the same thing. Now the heater is not working. What's going on here? I tried resetting the breaker to power cycle everything and am getting the same problem. Thanks for any help!

From past posts it appears you have Pentair automation. Do you? How is the heater connected to the automation?

Please fill out your signature. Really helps us help you.

I'll be sure to update my signature today! I do have a pentair control board that has a heater switch. I just tried bypassing that switch by connecting the two black wires behind the control board together to see if that would allow the heater to bypass the control board but no luck. I'm not sure if that makes sense? Still same issue, just keeps blinking "version 2.0" almost as if it's turning itself on and off again every 1-2 seconds.

You need to set the water temperature on the Mastertemp to max for both Spa and Pool prior to connecting to the automation. Did you?

@ajw22 has more experience walking members through heater issues than I do.

I believe you put your automation into Service Mode. Then you can use the heater panel to set the max temperatures for each mode. I use 104 for spa and 90 for pool.

Yes I connected it to the fireman's switch, made sure to match the old heaters connections perfectly. In service mode the pump will not activate for some reason? "set the automaton to show heater not master temp" how do I do that part?

In Service mode the pump is disconnected from the automation. You can use the pump controls on the pump if you wish to run the pump.

What automation?
From the Wiki I linked.
The IntelliCenter configuration must be set to the correct control interface

  • If the MasterTemp is connected to the IntelliCenter using RS-485 then settings: system configuration: other equipment: heaters and set the heater to "mastertemp".
  • If the MasterTemp is connected to the IntelliCenter using the 2-wire fireman’s switch at J2 then settings: system configuration: other equipment: heaters and set the heater to "heater".

What Pentair automation system do you have?

Did you do a DIY install?

Post pics of the 2 wire control heater connection at both ends.

Where is the AC power to the heater wired to?

The heater connected to 120V or 240V?

Easy touch 4 with screen logic is what I have. Excuse the muddy messy set up, my mechanical room was under 5 feet of water in March. So I attempted to go into "system configuration" but I dont have that as a menu option. I did find the "diagnostic" then "self test" mode and magically I started the self test and the heater is now ON. When I finish the self test mode everything passes (technically, see next comment) and the heater turns off. Side note, what is the VART test? Depending on my answer of open or closed the system will either pass without error or say there is 1 error.

So right now, I'm leaving the pool in "self test" mode without hitting any buttons to begin the test and the heater is ON. I guess I'll just leave it running for a while so I can swim comfortably later. This all has to be a programming error I'm guessing? Pool rookie over here. Trying to DIY the fix. Was quoted 10k for a new heater and install and my dad and I did it for the cost of heater which was only 3,800 from Ebay. Fixed the screen logic, fixed the intellichem, fixed the temp probes, really just learning as I go. I really appreciate everyones help here.

Easytouch 4. DIY fix, not install. It's a Modpool container pool that came completely set up. Everything was submerged underwater in spring and now I'm tryin to fix it and save some money. AC power is hooked up to the green/black/red wires coming out the unit. I also wired in the fireman's switch as I guess it's called to the two black wires out of the Easytouch as it was on my last heater. Heater is connected to 240V

Yeah, I remember your thread about your flooded equipment room.

You have the new MasterTemp connected heater with the Version 2 board and firmware. The diagnostics and error handling were changed on it and we are not yet familiar with all of its quirks.

We will try and help you the best we can. As you figure stuff out please share it with us.

Couple more photos for reference. This is the new heater. Still running while the system sits in "self test" mode on AUTO. The heater flame does continue to cycle on and off every few minutes or so. I'm guessing it's from the leftover water in the gas line. Upon installing this yesterday we discovered an absolute surge of leftover water in the gas pipe. We sprayed the gas pipe out but I'm assuming there is still some water in there which is causing the flame to burn out, thus it going on and off again?

Could be water in the gas line or air in the gas line.

I would check the gas pressures with a manometer.
