Pentair MasterTemp 400 Not Connecting to Easytouch

We have a Pentair MasterTemp 400 that all of a sudden no longer seems connected to our easytouch / screenlogic system. We can't control (turn on/off, set temp, etc) but if we turn on the heater manually we can see the temp on the screenlogic app which I take it means the wiring is still good. Spoke with Pentair and they said that because we can turn on the heater manually that it's a wiring issue, however, they could not explain why we were able to see info in screenlogic if the wiring was bad. Pentair was no additional help. I looked at the fireman's switch and the wires are connected and the fuse is good. Any help in troubleshooting would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you

If you can turn the heater on manually it means the heater relay in the EasyTouch is closed and powering the heater when it should be open.

Do you have a multimeter and know how to check continuity?

If so, check if the gas heater relay is open or closed when the heater is OFF on the EasyTouch.

If that is your problem, then either the relay on the board has welded closed, or you blew a relay driver chip on the board, which is socketed and replaceable.

Read Pentair Automation Systems - Further Reading for more on the relay driver chip.

J19 is the heater relay. It closes the 24V fireman’s switch circuit to power the heater.

While I'm waiting for the rain to stop (we are in a drought but now it wants to rain...LOL) can I leave the relay on the circuit board and remove the two wires and test touching the screw terminals or do I need to remove the relay from the board completely?

The relay is soldered to the board and not removable or replaceable.

Disconnect the wires from the screws, and you can test the continuity of the relay contacts at the screws.

The relay is not soldered - see photo. After unplugging the wires, and leaving on the circuit board, the multimeter would not even register that I was trying to test the continuity - it was like I was not touching anything. Thoughts?

That is just a connector block and not the relay.

You need to take me through step by step how you tried to test.

Where did you touch the probes to?

Was the IntelliCenter powered on?

Was the gas heater set ON or OFF in the IntelliCenter?

With the connector pulled off the board does your MasterTemp heater run? Or does the control panel not light up?

Where did you touch the probes to?
The top of the screws. Then I pulled the connector off and tried touching the two posts that the connector slides over. Same result.

Was the IntelliCenter powered on?
Yes

Was the gas heater set ON or OFF in the IntelliCenter?
Off
The heater com in the settings menu is set to yes.

Turn the water temperature up above the actual temperature so the IntelliCenter will turn on the heater and see if the relay closes.

It will run if I turn it on at the heater itself but not through easy touch or screenlogic.
If the connector is pulled off the EasyTouch board and your heater still runs, then there is a short in the 2-wire control cable to the fireman's switch.

Check the connection at the heater and disconnect the wire from the heater. Check the wire for a short or replace the cable.

With the cable disconnected from the heater and the fireman's switch not jumpered at the heater, the MasterTemp should not power on.

The MasterTemp Installation Manual specifies to use 18 gauge wire with a minimum 3/64” (1.2mm) thick insulation rated for a temperature rise of at least 105°C. The area the wire passes through can get hot and melt wire insulation. That probably caused the short.

Having challenges finding that particular wire. A local company has 16 gauge with a 5mm insulation but I have to buy a full role of 500ft. Might have to go that route...

Do the best you can, or plan on checking and changing the wire annually.

Got it rewired. The heater can no longer be turned on at the unit itself, BUT it still won't turn on. I "think" that's progress as now we've eliminated the wiring as the issue. Are we back to the relay? How can I determine which relay is the one for the heater?
