My pump was leaking and based on comments and suggestions here, I called a pool guy to come take a look. He replaced the shaft seal and it looked like it fixed the problem. The next morning when the pump started it sounded terrible and by the end of the day it still appeared to have a slight leak. The pool guy came back a few days later and said the motor was shot so now I need to get a new motor. Any suggestions for good replacements for a Pentair Intelliflow VS pump? Also, what would cause the pump to sound so bad (it still runs) the day after replacing the shaft seal?

Three possibilities come to mind. The first is that the leak damaged the motor. The second, the seal replacement was not done correctly. The third, the VFD or the motor failed independently.
What is the vfd? I asked the guy if he thought it was strange that the pump was damaged the next day. It makes me wonder if there was damage from doing the seal replacement. He did a lot of digging to get the old seal out. Should it have been that hard?

VFD is the box on top of the motor - it’s basically a high power electronic device generating variable frequency voltage for the motor. I think you cannot buy it as a part separate from the motor.

Replacing the seal is normally a simple task, unless the pump is old and rusted.

The seal plate might be damaged.

Maybe the bottom bolts are loose due to bad brass grommets and the impeller is scraping on the seal plate.

The service person should return to disassemble the pump and determine exactly what went wrong.

The bolt goes into the brass grommet. If you torque it too hard, the grommet will come loose.
Yeah so about that grommet... it came off:

Thank you. He came back and took it apart, replaced with a new shaft seal and it still sounds the same. I’m assuming he checked these other items but maybe I’ll have to see if I can check it myself. I’m hoping it holds out for a week or two.

Sorry, meant to say motor.
It is a full pump. If you wish to just replace the motor, you need to be sure the wet end is in good shape and then look at alternative motors. IF you have automation (not shown in your signature), alternative motors may or may not work with automation.
