He's a fire captain and I'm an ER nurse. Before he promoted to fire captain he was a fireman/paramedic and that's how we met [emoji7] he'd bring me patients and would always make me laugh. He offered to help me put up some shelves in my place and I liked him so much I pretended I didn't know how and let him come over and do it. Lol. Here we are now and he refers to the table saw, the miter saw, the Kreg jig, the sander, the paint cabinet and finish nailers as "Joannie's tools". There's no fooling him now - the honeymoon is over.

Mike got home around 9 this morning and we started cleaning and prepping around 10. I'm just finishing lunch for the kids and he's mixing up some mortar and thinset...we might actually make some real progress soon! Too bad he goes back to work tomorrow [emoji52]

Your pool is really coming along nicely. Love the coping. That's exactly what I want. My PB only said, modern edge, gray pre-cast 2.5" thick, which seems pretty thick. How thick is yours?

Why did you need to waterproof the bond beam? Is it because you have water features?
I'm going to have a wall about 2 1/2-3 ft from my pool in one section, it will be 2' high.
No water features, but a planter instead. I'm wondering what all I need to do in regards to waterproofing.

The are planing on digging a trench behind the bond beam and putting in some rebar & shooting it with shotcrete. I hope this is a good way to do it!

Tiles fail when water gets behind them and the coping will also fail if it isn't waterproofed. The merlex super blockade was recommended by the coping manufacturer so that's what we used for the bond beam it went on pretty easily.

We shot the retaining wall for the bar with shotcrete and it was great - way faster than poured in place concrete and we only had to use forms on one side.

You need to waterproof the inside of the planter or water will come through the shotcrete and cause whatever finish you put on it to fail and eventually the shotcrete will also fail. For that we used a latex based masonry waterproof product called drylok. It rolled on like paint. We did two coats.

this is great information. I have a raised planter with a water feature and I see I now need to water proff it to get maximum longevity out of my shell. Can I purchase that stuff at HD? If not where do I look

It was dark when we finished so I don't have any pics yet of the coping work we did but here is a pic of Mike after we got about three of them down. We did 13 today out of 51...there is a bit of a learning curve to it but we are also cutting pieces and not cheating the spacing and making sure everything is level and sloping properly. I was mostly the grunt labor and gopher today but he did let me butter a few backs, mix the thinset, and hold some spacers.
