Opening my pool and want to do it real nice this time

Hey guys my pool will be closed on Saturday. So the night before i am going to vacuum real good. I backwashed last week so probably will not do again. But i am thinking instead of bringing the pool to Slam level which is 16 now that my CYA is only 40
Is it ok if i go a little above Slam level just for an extra measure for the off season?

It it not recommend to go above slam level.

Its best to close when the water is 60 degrees or less. Algae doesnt really grow at that temp or below. Since your not doing that, if it were me, I would keep up wIth FC, untill the water cooled off. You can peel back a corner of the cover and check the FC level and temperature. You can mix it with a small sump pump or pond pump, just let it sit on the bottom and pump for a while.

Thats probably your best shot at opening to a crystal clear pool. But open early, before the water warms up.

It's going to be 83 on Saturday. I know everybody is closing here but most of them are going to have a rough go in the spring. It was 92 today and the pool water felt the warmest it's been after a few similar days.

I also wouldn't go above slam.

Just for a point of reference, I'm quite a bit north of you and I'm closing 10/9. We have someone close for us too because we're not interested in doing the work. You don't need to close when everyone else is if your pool company has the later appt available.

I have to call the person and see if he can postpone. But all next week starting i think on Tuesday and beyond the temps are going to be only in the 70s. ?? I mean i always closed at this time ?? And when he puts the cover on plus the leaf cover it has very little give to pick it up and add more bleach if that is what is needed especially since there would be no way to mix the bleach??

Above grounds don't allow adding chlorine once covered, when properly secured. You'd never get in a AB pool I covered either.

It's not so much next week as it is last week. The water is warm and will take 5 days or so of cooler weather to drop. IIRC you can average 5 or 7 days highs/lows and get a pretty good guess on the water temp. The pool water fluctuates too so depending on the time of day you test it, it might not be spot on with the average, but it'll be close.

You did a lot of things you we're lucky to survive with a clear pool. 😁

And like I said some pages back, if this is the year you finally got a swamp, no matter how bad it is, we've fixed 1000 worse.

But if you could hold off 2 or 3 more weeks until it's more seasonal out, your odds will greatly increase in your favor.

The only additional recommendation is to add Polyquat 60 (No other product!) at the bottle rate.

Polyquat 60 will likely last longer than the chlorine. If they don't have the name brand ProTeam brand, this is the chemical you need : Polyquaternary Ammonium Chloride.

Use it as directed on the bottle with half SLAM FC. Say a Hail Mary, cover her up and we'll be here if you need in the spring. Just think. Normally we are selling newbs on the program and testing themselves, *and* trying to clear their swamp. You've already got 2 of the 3 down Pat so it'll be cake. (y) *if* it was to go south.

I am postponing the closing. Definitely one week maybe a bit more. Again my wife is upset because she said u will be working on the pool still. Oh well. I know she just does not get it. Believe me I wish i could close it now but i guess this climate change and this being the hottest summer on record ever we just have to acclimate and change certain things. Which is what i am doing by postponing the closing. A little more bleach days and another 1-2 vacuums and pool brushing for the short term and then i will be good for next season. I will probably close hopefully 2 weeks from this Saturday

Exactly. Other years it was cool now. This week so far was well into the 90s. We gotta roll with the punches.

On the plus side, go swim. I hopped in today and it was arguably the warmest it's been. And, yet, we wore hoodies for chunks of August. :ROFLMAO:

I loosen my little cable a little, remove a few cover clips & open the cover in 1 section of the pool periodically throughout the off season to get a sample - it takes a couple minutes. It won’t fall in if you fold it back. In an oval pool you would do this on one of the short sides.
The cover should be resting on the water not pulled completely tight across the pool like a trampoline. Otherwise when it rains/snows the weight of whats on top of the cover has no support and it subsequently pulls on the top rails & walls where it is secured.

I just checked pool math and it says if i want to lower the ph from 8.2 to 7.4 i need 27 ounces of 29% muriatic acid. Is that the strength. Or i believe someone mentioned half strength?? If so i guess i need to double the amount. And if as mentioned i vacuum and backwash the.night before and SLAM also that night when would i put the muriatic acid in?? And lastly to be a pain. I survived all season with my ph hovering between 7.8 and 8.2. Do i really need the addition of muriatic acid??

Add chlorine if needed, or let the level fall on its own before closing if it is too high. The PH level should be between 7.2 and 7.6.

I read this on google search. She maybe i should just lower it to 7.6 and not 7.4. And how about the timing. Is the night beforr closing ok to add both acid and chlorine??
