Only run intellichlor during the night

Hi,

In my mind running intellichlor during the day is not very useful when the sun breakdown most of the chlorine anyway. I would prefer to just run it during the night and off or very low setting during the day. As war as I know there is no way to adjust chlorine output based on time so I was wondering if I can use one of the relays in my intellicenter to switch the intellichlor on and off based on a schedule. Obviously I would need to modify the wiring a bit and was just wondering if anyone did that before.

Thanks!

I run my Intellichlor during the day to replace the chlorine lost to the sun on the pool surface. This keeps my FC stable.

Over a 24 hour cycle it averages out. There is no benefit to micro managing chlorine generation.

The chlorine needs to be generated and in the water before it is needed for sanitation. The rest of the chlorine is just waiting in the water in reserve for when it is needed.

It does not matter if you generate the chlorine at night 12 hours before it is needed, or generate it 12 minutes before it is needed during the day.

You are just making your system more complex and more work for yourself. That goes against the TFP prime objective.

Cat,

In my mind it does not make any sense to run the pump and not be making chlorine...

Your pool will use X amount of chlorine each day.. Running the Cell only at night will not reduce the amount of chlorine your pool will need and it won't make your cell last longer...

Running just at night means that when the cell shuts off in the morning, you will need enough FC to last the entire day and still have your FC be in your Target range..

I am sorry, but what you want to do, makes no logical sense to me at all..

What is your goal here???

Keep me in mind, if you decide to do this anyway, as I can tell you how to run your pump, without the cell. No re-wiring needed.

Thanks,

Jim R.

My thinking was that when I didn’t have a salt cell and had to dump in liquid chlorine I always did that in the evening when the pool was in the shade (not morning). So the chlorine could be used to sanitize the water not be broken down by the sun (any remaining chlorine was broken down by the sun in the morning I guess).

If you are running the pump during the day, the SWG should be set to be on as well.

'X' amount of chlorine is going to be used every day. You need to add that amount of chlorine daily via your SWG. Doesn't matter if it's during the day or at night.
Adding chlorine during the day via your SWG isn't going to make the pool use more chlorine over a 24 hour period.

Some of us run our pumps 24/7 and allow our SWG to add a little chlorine for all of that 24 hours.

Thank you everyone for your additional insights :) My initial concern was (since my pump is running mostly during the day because of solar) that more chlorine is wasted due to the sun vs during the night nothing should be wasted to the sun.

No chlorine is wasted.

The sun UV consumes the same amount of chlorine during the day whether your pump is running or not.
