On average, how much chlorine is consumed on a daily basis?

33' above ground using a sand filter system that I run continuously, utilizing 12% liquid chlorine, with very little bather load.
It seems like I am going through an unusually high amount of chlorine daily to keep chlorine level at recommenced ppm. I have been following TFP system for a couple of years, but I am missing something this time. Last night, FC= 0, at midnight I added 1 gallon of 12% chlorine to my pool. These are the reading I took this morning at 7:45 am before work. Water is clear and beautiful. Within 24 hours FC will be back to 0. I am using the pool calculator to add correct amount of chlorine early each morning. Targeting FC=5ppm

FC=4.6
CC=.4
PH=7.6
TA=110
CYA=35
What am I overlooking?

Fish,

Most pools use between 2 and 4 ppm of FC each day.. The more sun and bather load the higher the usage will be.. The less sun and bather load the less usage there will be.

If your pool lost more than 1 ppm of FC over night it is a sure sign that you have algae... Even if you can't see it...

Here is how to do an official Overnight Chlorine Loss Test, but it sounds to me like you have already failed it.. Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

You need to do a SLAM... SLAM Process Which should be pretty quick if your pool is clear..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Not knowing the depth, but assuming 4', your pool would hold about 25,600 gallons.
At a typical loss of 2-4 ppm per day that means 52 to 105 ounces of 12.5% per day. So just over a quart and a half to almost a gallon.

If you suspect something is eating it, do a proper Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. That means adding a substantial amount of bleach around sundown, say enough to get around 10 FC. Let it mix for a while, perhaps even brush some to really mix it well, and test FC using the 25 ml sample when no more sunlight is on the pool. Leave the pump run. Then set the alarm and test it again before the sun hits it. In a perfect world, you will have lost none. In reality, less than 1 FC loss is considered a pass.

If that passes, then try raising CYA a little bit. If it failed, raise the FC and start your SLAM Process
