Old single speed Hayward died. Need to know how to wire up new VS pump to SWG.

Hey TFP friends

My extremely old 3/4hp single speed Hayward pump has finally died and so I need to replace the pump. Easy solution is to just swap in a new single speed pump and im up and running again. I am, however, interested in the idea of a new VS pump but am not sure exactly how to wire it up with the SWG and timer. Currently my pump/SWG power comes from the sub panel with a 120v 20amp circuit and then goes through a Intermatic mechanical timer then that power is split to both the pump and the swg to ensure the salt cell only is receiving power when the pump kicks on. I have heard some people say I can eliminate the mechanical timer or something and the new VS can control schedule for both the pump and SWG maybe? Im a fairly capable DIYer and wired up everything myself originally but I am hoping to avoid a huge technical undertaking.

Im interested in folks thoughts on how easy it would be to put in a VS pump and rewire it to ensure the SWG is only on with VS runs, etc. Or if im better off just swapping in another single speed and not opening a can of worms.

Thanks in advance.

Single speed pumps are technically no longer manufactured for sale in the USA. Excluding very low thp systems.

There are some VS pumps that have relay boards available. The best is a Pentair Intelliflo 3 with the add on relay board. You will need 220V 20 amp circuit for that pump .
