Have a 32.000 gal plaster wet edge pool. Became lazy this fall and did not notice my SWG was failing. Added salt without checking the #'s, pool was clear so all is good - right? Not. Anyway finally took a sample to local pool store and salt was at 4000. CH was at 734. pH was also low - under 7 so I brought that back up (baking soda). Then I remembered I have the Taylor salt test which confirmed the high #. Needed to get the salt down to verify the swg is not working. Pool is currently filling. I tested my tap water - CH is at 150. Do I need to test anything else from the tap? I plan on balancing initially when filled with CYA and liquid bleach - which do I start with? Do I test the pool water and verify everything is at 0? I have the pool calc app so I know what to add, just want to go in the correct order.

Did you retest your CH with your own kit?

Once you have refilled your pool, run a full set of tests. Adjust the CYA to 30 or so (for winter), pH in the 7's. FC above 3 ppm. Then maintain those until spring when the water temperature rises to 60F and your SWCG will operate again.

mk - thanks for helping
Yes, I have the larger Taylor kit K2006 plus the salt test.
Hopefully it will be filled later today. Do I let the pump cycle and test or just test once full? I have 4 pounds of powder cya and several gallons of bleach/acid to add.
Thanks

Pool is filled and running. Tested water:
Free Chlorine: 0 PPM
pH: 8.0
Total Alkalinity: 160 PPM
Calcium Hardness: 150 PPM
CYA: 0 PPM

Added liquid chlorine, MA and CYA (in sock in skimmer - need another 4 pounds) per pool math.
Question - how often do I test? in an hour and again in the am?
Pump will run for 24 hours - how many days?
Thanks, Nelson

Test tomorrow. No rush with the cold water. CYA just add the additional you need with out testing.

You will need some calcium. Target 300 ppm CH.

Thanks - I need 44 pounds? Suggestions on where to purchase?

Looks like I have to go to that chain place...

Check Amazon.
You could use cal hypo for chlorine to help. But you do not want to stay at 150 ppm CH for long. Do not aggressively lower your TA, it is helping protect your plaster. Only lower pH to 7.6 when it goes above 8.

We have a local pool store I'll check their supply of cal cl. So for now pH should be around 7.6 until I increase CH?

No need to drive it lower than that. If it sits near 8, leave it. With the cold water things should not move all that quick.

Salt was at 4000+. With my luck I would have done a partial drain and it not be enough and have to drain again. I found some on amazon.
