I have Hayward equipment and have had bad luck with their salt cells. My latest one which is 2 or 3 years old is giving me constant low salt readings and not pr. Salt is not low, it's over 4000 at this point cause I've been adding to try and get it to activate. Anyway, took it to Leslie's for testing and they confirmed it failed the test. That's all they tell you, no other detail. So I'm done with Hayward for now atleast. Can't bring myself to pay $900 or whatever they go for now for a new faulty Hayward. Looking for any recommendations of generic salt cells that I can try. What brands are decent, where do I buy them?

If you've been using your automation controller to set the output % of your SWG, or get status reports, etc, you'll likely lose all that with any other brand. The communication protocol that manufacturers use to control their products is propriatary and not likely compatible with other manufacturers' products. Though all brands of automation can be set up to just turn an SWG on and off. If that is not an issue, then many here like Circupool:

Be sure to get one sized for at least twice your pool's water volume.

If you only got two years out of the Hayward cell then you may be able to replace it under warranty, as long as it was not a one year cell. Look at the serial number on the cell. If it starts with 1E then somehow you purchased the 3000 hour warranty replacement cell. Otherwise, it should start with either 3E (T-CELL-15) or 4E (T-940).

Hayward has recently reconfigured it's product numbers as they are phasing out T-CELL-15 and renaming it T-940 with the 4 year warranty on the T-940 changing to 3 years. The company has chosen to establish a new S3 series as their system of the future complete with cells that are designed only for that system and they can keep the generics out for at least 8 years.

The Hayward salt test at Leslie is a simple PASS/FAIL test. No maybe's or reason why the cell failed. You may also be able to squeeze more life out of the cell by changing the cell type to T-9, T-5, or T-3 if you have a board that is at least r1.50 or higher. Generic boards are also available but they are more trouble than they are worth in my opinion as the readouts are different than the GLX-MAIN-PCB board. The biggest drawback is you cannot switch cell types.

Generic reseller's like myself are good for mostly only t-15 cells. IMO, you are looking mostly for customer support as some of us are very good but some have non-existent customer service. As I've said it the past, just stay away from Salt Pool Store (the grey CompuPool cells) that offer prices and warranties too good to be true. Hint; just add the word SCAM or REVIEW after the store name to see what I'm talking about. Surprised so many customers still fall for their tricks.

Circupool has a good T-15 equivalent cell that does not require you to purchase their controller.

Thanks both for your reply. Yeah, my current cell only had a 1 year warranty as it was a warranty replacement for the previous one that failed. Didn’t realize an off brand would have limited communication with my automation box. So it seems you’re saying it would just run at 100% and I wouldn’t be able to pull diagnostics numbers? Anyway I’ll check out your recommendations.

I can't speak for brands other than the one I own, but I don't think so. You'd be able to set the output of the SWG manually, to whatever increments its onboard interface allows, you just wouldn't be able to do so from the pool automation interface. And whatever status (diagnostics) it offers might be available on the unit itself, just not relayed to the automation's screens. Using your automation's relay systems, you'd be able to schedule the on-off times of the SWG. So you'd lose some niceties, but you'd still have basic on-off functionality using the automation controller.

We can find you an AquaLogic user for more details, or you can refer to the owner manuals of the AquaLogic and whatever SWG you're thinking of buying to see what they each can do with the other.
