OB in NW Las Vegas- Open book here and on a budget

Should I be concerned about a CSI +.67 to +1.07 while doing the bicarbonate startup? I am dosing muriatic acid early am and late pm. Every morning and evening prior to dosing the PH is back to 8.2. I understand this is to be expected. It has been pretty simple to add 29-32 ounces of MA each time which brings the PH right to 7.8. Pool math with my numbers and a PH of 7.8 show a CSI of +.67. With a PH of 8.2 the CSI is +1.07.

That's why it's so important to have the sequestrant in the water and to not let the pH get out of control. Your TA has also likely come down some from the acid additions.

Scale formation is not a fast process so it's not like it's going to happen overnight. Having the CSI so high is the idea behind this startup to oversaturate the water with calcium carbonate so the plaster absorbs calcium instead of leaching it into the water.

Haha...not so much banned but there really isn't a reason to since you already have a rough idea of where it is and it's not going to go up so.....

Since you are adding about 30 oz of acid per day, you can expect the TA to fall by 8-10 ppm per addition. That's why I suggested you start with the TA where it was, once the startup is over your TA should be close to a reasonable range

Brian,
I truly apologize. I know this is against the rules. I’ll try to behave. My grandson was helping with water chemistry and was accidentally thrown in. Kind of like a Big Unenttended Cannonball!.....It was great.....oops...I meant to say that I chastised him for being close to my sling shot of an arm. No more getting in the pool till we are done with the startup.
Total accident.

Staying on the plan of testing PH twice daily. Ph continues to climb to 8.1-8.2 during each test. I’ll stay the course and do a full set of tests on Monday. Monday will be seven days since fill.
03-24-18
9:00 AM
PH 8.1
Added 24 ounces MA

7:30 PM
PH 8.2
Added 30 ounces of MA

Seven days into the bicarbonate startup. Continuing to target PH 7.8. Completed full test today.
3-26-18
9:30 AM
Temp- 58 degrees (windy and cold overnight)
PH- 8.2 (Consistant rise to 8.2+ with each test, twice daily)
TA- 230 (Down 70 from first test)
FC- .5
CC- 0
CH- 325 (up 25 since first tests)
CYA- 0 (Thought I might get a reading since Trichlor pucks have been added)

Will I continue to target PH 7.8 until TA gets down to normal numbers? At what point do I want to concentrate on bringing chlorine up?

You don't need to worry about the chlorine level until you discontinue the pucks. Once the startup is over you can add salt, cya and mange the pool based off the recommended levels.

If for some reason you want to add cya and raise the chlorine level now, there is nothing wrong with that either
