Newish owner and day 1 of Taylor test kit

Okay! I’m back again and at a total loss. I have gotten my cya down to 60 (yesterday). Please see levels from yesterday morning attached below. Last night I added the recommended 118oz of liquid chlorine. Today I am registering no chlorine 😩 I have another chlorine lock. This is the third time this summer. I’m at a total loss. I just changed my cartridges 2 weeks ago- every time I get a chlorine lock when I change the cartridges it seems to fix the problem and then a few weeks later I’m back to square one. I will say while I’ve been working on remediating my cya- I have known chlorine contaminates. Does this mean I should now SLAM?

Your issue is not chlorine lock.

Your issue is not maintaining FC for your CYA. Always follow this:--Link-->FC/CYA Levels

Dose FC so that your results are always in range, WHEN YOU TEST. If you have to raise FC above range, so that you are in range the next day when you test, then do that.

I thought I was doing that. Yesterday I was low on my FC so I added the recommended amount and then today it registered none which made me think chlorine lock. I’ll see what happens these next few days. And try adding more to play around with it.
I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions. Thanks for your patience’s as always

Recommended amount to get to what FC value.

Your CYA is 60. Your target range is 7-9. In summer you can use 3-5FC per day. If your FC demand is 5FC per day, dose to 8+5=13, so that when you test, you are in range. 13 - 5 = 8 in range.

At this point, you likely have algae, even if you can't see it.

Do this test tonight to confirm or deny the presence of algae. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Thank you! You are correct! I tested last night and retested. I lost 12.5ppm over night. I’ll continue to SLAM.
My target FC for SLAM is 24. Right now I have a FC of 25. I’ve read the slam instructions and maybe I am not understanding, but if I need to maintain that 24 how do I know how much to add this morning? Or just add a gallon of 10% and then retest in 2-3 hours and if needed, add more?

Test, use pool math (PoolMath) and enter your test result. Use pool math to determine how much chlorine to add to get from your test FC to target FC.
I’m back 😬 I’ve been working on. SLAMMING my pool- I have no visible algae and the water is crystal clear, but I fly through chlorine and my CC was 1. Is it normal to SLAM and go through so much chlorine or is it a result of the intense heat and sun we are having? (90ish degrees full sun) I know it can take awhile- I’m coming up on a week, but I’m averaging about 6-7 gallons of chlorine (10%) a day to keep it at SLAM levels. That feels like a lot. And I have yet to meet all 3 criteria to stop slamming- the one I can’t meet is the chlorine drop over night.

Normal. You haven't met OCLT, nor CC<=.5.

Scrub the bubblers. remove the main drain covers, scrub them and the inlet in the floor (TURN THE PUMP OFF). Check the weir doors for algae. Scrub the skimmers. Remove ladders and scrub INSIDE and out. Remove any lights and scrub behind them.

I just want to say THANK YOU!!! It took just shy of 2 weeks of slamming, but I have finally met all the criteria to ease off. Thank you for your patiences with me- my pool seems to be holding chlorine way better than it was. Now my only question is should I adjust alkalinity? My test result yesterday showed 220, but I’m not having any issues. PH is registering 7.8 and has been stable (for now).

Your choice about managing Alkalinity - having it high will make pH go up faster - adding acid periodically to correct that will bring down both the pH and the Alk, but at a slowish rate for the Alk. No harm with a vinyl pool and high Alk, as long as you keep pH in the 7's. It will just take longer to come down.

If the adding acid begins to be a pain (frequency needed) then you can opt to bring the Alk down faster. The basics here: Lower Total Alkalinity But it can be a bit of a juggling act to prevent the pH from going too far down when the Alk changes rapidly. Hence the emphasis on using the pH test to judge how much acid to add, and doing it in steps, and not trying to kill the Alk really quickly directly. Here's PoolStoreds thread about how he helped it all along: Lowering Total Alkalinity (TA) Quickly with the Acid Aeration Method
