Hi All! I am fairly new to the pool life. I can’t for the life of me get my pool balanced. Right now my CYA and Chlorine levels are 0. If I’m not mistaken, am I suppose to raise my CYA level before adding the Chlorine? I have a 19000 gal saltwater vinyl pool. The app is telling me to add 296oz of stabilizer. TIA

Hey J and Welcome !!!

First things first. How are you testing. The strips are awful at CYA (or any of then for that matter) and the pool store is worse.

Is this a brand spanking new pool ? Because CYA doesn't occur naturally in watet so we can agree it's 0 if so, if none has been added in any form either liquid, granular or puck.

Liquid CYA will raise you about 19. Granular CYA will raise you about 120. Liquid CYA is hard to get accurate if using less than the full jug. The important stuff clumps at the bottom and you mostly pour water out until the end. Shake and rinse out well when using liquid.

Always get a good baseline and then add 80% wait a few days and test again before creeping up to the target. On a brand new pool, I would shoot for 70% because builders overestimate gallons like it's their jobs.

If I’m not mistaken, am I suppose to raise my CYA level before adding the Chlorine?
You can add both, but give them plenty of room or 15 mins in between if adding liquid over a return jet.

Liquid CYA will raise you about 40. Granular CYA will raise you about 120. Liquid CYA is hard to get accurate if using less than the full jug. The important stuff clumps at the bottom and you mostly pour water out until the end. Shake and rinse out well when using liquid.

I am testing with strips 😬 what kind of test should I be using? The pool was filled on October. I have previously used pool places but every time I went it was 200+ dollars. I am using liquid.

You need to confirm your cya with the proper test before adding any incase you need to do the
SLAM Process since you have had some time with fc @ zero & may have organics brewing.
Taylor K2006 +salt (available on Amazon & other online retailers)
Or
Tf100/pro +salt (available @tftestkits.net)
are what you need to get.
Test Kits Compared
Both contain this test & all the necessary tests get your pool in tip top shape. All Other kits are missing key components.

If you ever added trichlor or dichlor (powdered shock or tablets) you likely have some cya already in the water.

*Until your kit comes- Add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine per day to keep things sanitary & prevent it from getting worse.
Use
PoolMath to calculate amounts.

Once it comes, do all the tests & list your results here in this thread like this

Cya
Salt
& we can help you from there.

in your location with a swg your cya should eventually be around 70ppm to prevent all the fc your swg makes from being consumed by the sun ☀️
But before you increase it that high you will want to do an
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to rule out algae/organics, the kit is necessary to do the overnight chlorine loss test.
If you pass the oclt, you can increase cya to the 60-70 range, chlorinate to the corresponding target 🎯 or a scootch above
FC/CYA Levels & set the swg to maintain that target

If you fail the oclt or you have visible algae/cloudy water you should only raise cya to 30ppm & do the
SLAM Process as slam level is much higher for higher cya levels and this can make the slam more difficult.

While you’re waiting for your kit to arrive so you can take action here’s a little homework for you…

I get that 178 ounces of granular CYA will take you from zero to 70ppm.
One jug of liquid CYA properly emptied/rinsed out will give you 19ppm.

You have a med-large pool...it takes a bit more chemicals to reach your goals.

Go for a better test method.... I personally prefer the TF-ProSalt but others like the Taylor K-2006C better. Both are the recommend kits that are best sized for a season or two of testing. Both use the same reagents (Taylor). You can find the Taylor at various sources but the TF-ProSalt only from www.tftestkits.net

Thanks! My pool test kit just came in. I’m trying to test for chlorine and it’s telling me to use R0001 drops but they do not have those drops in the kit
