Hello, we got our pool going last year but never got to a great start as it was September. Just opened up to a green pool. Had water tested. I have a high ph, TA, and very high CYA. I have tried to drained the pool half way three times and refill. Cya still high on test strips. I was trying to lower ph and used sodium bisulfate and my ph did not budge. Nothing I am doing is lowering anything. What am I doing wrong? Rethinking this pool thing. I can’t shock a pool and get rid of my algae until my ph is lower right? Where do I start? I feel like the pool place is of little help.

Welcome to TFP!!!

I sorry to hear about your pool. Don't worry it will be crystal clear.

The first thing you are going to need is a reliable test kit. Either a TF-100 (link in my signature) or a Taylor K-2006C. Both use Taylor reagents.

To avoid the algae to get worst 3/4 of a gallon of 10% Liquid Chlorine every evening with your pump running.
Once you get your own test results we will be able to better help you.

Welcome to TFP, home of green to clean pools!

We're here to help. Test strips (we call 'em guess strips) are no good. You need accurate test results. The initial investment will save you hundreds of dollars worth of problems.

Spend some time wading around in Pool School until you get your test kit. Here's a good set of articles to start with.

Best wishes!

I can not figure out where to find the link in your signature.

The main two kits we recommend are:

Test Kits - one of these. The TF-100 is just the reagents, and the TF-100 Pro includes a case and a device to help with mixing/swirling the water when testing.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002IXIJ0?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_X4EHYTCEJ1Y48JFQEGYP - Taylor K-2006c kit

They have the same reagents, just different amounts. I got the Taylor kit. Full disclosure, when I first came here, I thought I was trying to be sold a test kit and decided I'd get it from Amazon instead to avoid being roped into yet another pool purchase...but now if I had it to do over again, I'd get the TF-100. Better guarantee on fresh reagents, amounts are more suitable for a single-pool user, etc.

As mentioned - while waiting for your test kit to come in, add 5ppm of FC daily with liquid chlorine / plain bleach. The amount to add will depend on your pool size - you can use an app like PoolMath to figure out how much, or the link at the bottom of this page for the "Old PoolMath Webpage". :)

Can I do this with a high ph? High cya?

Without the kit, you can't be 100% sure you have high pH or high CYA. Once it's in, you can run the tests and be confident in the numbers you're using to make changes to your pool. Until then, you're just adding some chlorine to make sure things don't get worse while you're waiting for the kit to arrive. :)
