I've input to a couple of people's threads. Especially the ones that are resistant to the advice given. Best advice ever: get a real test kit and switch to liquid chlorine!
New to inground pools

QUick update. Pool continues to be clear. I test every day (though some days I do OTO to save my reagents for FAS-DPD). The chlorine seems to have stabilized quite well. THough it has been rather cool and cloudy here. We have another cool day today but sunny. So I will FAS-DPD this evening then add any neederd chlorine.
Extended forecast has us in the low 70s for a while. Wife and D will not swim unless the water is 75+ and temp is near 80. So it might be awhile before any but me gets in it. But I feel so much more in control than I did last year. Had no idea about CYA except that by the end of the year the Guess Strips I was using showed that it was very high (nearly 200). So happy to have found this forum!
pH even with some rain, is holding at 7.2. I like my pH, to be in the lower end, especially with the CYA so high. Makes me feel better, since it is less conducive to any type of growth.
Now I just need some hot weather for some pooltime fun! (Got down to 48 here last night...)

Lots of rain today, pool up about 2 inches, definitely an inch and a half too high. So I'll be draining more water off tomorrow.
The pool is Crystal clear. Absolutely beautiful water. Needs a good vacuuming though. Weather has been horrible here. 65 for a high today.

Thanks Kim. Daughter has a birthday party a week from Saturday. She asked me last night if the pool was going to be warm enough. I told her I have no idea at this point!

Hey everyone, as we head towards closing season here in the north, just wanted to give a shoutout again to the forum! Amazing how much easier my pool care was this summer than last. Last year at this time I was showing definite signs of copper cyaunrite, as I was getting purple deposit on ladders, skimmers, etc. Not to mention the copper staining of my walls, and the constant fight against algae.
This year, none of that! A bottle of 12.5% bleach every day or two (or three) depending on swimmer load, temperature, sunlight, etc. As I was adding the bleach this morning I was thinking about how much I love my pool. At the end of last season I was loathing it!
So thank you TFP! YOU ALL RULE!

So opened the pool today. First the good news.
It wasn't nearly as bad as it was last year.
Bad news, still was green.
Good news, started slamming and gave it a good brushing and it's already looking a lot better! Thanks to TFP techniques and Poolmath!
Some more bad news, one of the hoses under the pad as developed an air leak. I've already pinpointed it and am going to patch it to buy time. I knew those hoses were nearing their end of life. Probably replace with PVC and be done with it.

Just ordered a new testkit, my current one is getting low on some of the reagents. Was just cheaper to buy a while new one.
Currently have my FC at 20. CYA still at 95. Had really hoped it would have gone lower than that with my drain down to close last fall and then my natural rain water refill. But I can live with it at 95 and manage it like I did last year.
The pool already looks better. I have the filter running 24/7. Having a good filter cartridge this year should mean it will clear a lot faster.

So I have been unsuccessful in stopping the air leak in the hose that is leaking air under my pad. I used a product that wraps around the hoses and is supposed to be air and water tight. It was some As Seen On TV product my wife had purchased a while back. I think part of the problem is that these hoses, though very thick and rigid, still have ridges on the outside and this stuff needs to be flat against the leaks to work. The packaging shows it sealing regular hoses, and plumbing, etc, nothing that is ridged.
So to my question, this is introducing air into the system before the pump and filter. How compromised is my filtration by this? I would really like to get the pool completely clear (it is probably 2-3 days away from that, before I start cutting into hoses and PVC. But if this is going to excessively prolong the clearing of the pool, then maybe I should bit the bullet and do it. I am running the pump 24/7 as per SLAM instructions.
Thoughts? Can it wait until the pool is clear and I am only running the pump overnight?

Bubbles at the top of the pump basket. I keep going out and letting air escape by loosening the air release at the top of the filter canister, there is usually about 3 seconds worth of air there. And then I get some air coming out from the inlets in the pool itself.
Frustrating part is that I know where the air leak is! Does anyone know of a better patching product I can use? I'll snap a pic of the hoses under the pad.

Have you tried a patch, like you'd patch a vinyl pool? Let it cute for 24 hours before you use it. That might work.

Also is this just a PVC pipe hose? Primered PVC only takes about 20 mins to seal after applying bonding cement, it should be a 30-45 min fix if you want to just cut it and use 2 couplings. Make sure they're pressure rated not normal house plumbing! Pressure rated PVC couplings are slightly thicker and are deeper.
Thanks everyone. I knew that pad work was in my future. This stuff has been in place since 2003. The only update the previous owner did was rebuild the pump when the bearings started to go. So I'm considering redoing everything at the same time. Redoing the plumbing, replacing the pump and filter, and replumbing all at the same time.
My main question is will this setup work for now until the pool is cleared up from opening, and then I can tackle upgrading everything at once.
