New Pool w/ Falls & Slide in Baton Rouge, LA

They should unscrew the nuts, remove the wood. Put a set on nuts and washers under the plate to level it. Then secure in place with the nuts and washers on the top of the plate. Finally, non-shrink grout should be placed under the plate to transfer the load from the plate to the deck.

Thanks for the suggestion vermaraj. They ended up removing the wood and cutting a stone the right size and using that instead, so I feel a lot better about that.

They started placing cinder blocks today. Due to the slide placement or oversized pad (or maybe a little bit of both), there is anywhere from an extra 4" - 10" of concrete on the back side. I know some of that will disappear when the flat rock is added on the cinder block, but I'm curious if they plan to leave the extra or cut it or what. Anyway, here are some photos of the day.

SO glad they replaced the wood piece! It looks like they are doing a good job! The "extra" on the back-I bet they leave it. It does not look bad BUT never judge an "artist" until they say they are done.

Me too! They are doing a great job! I'm also trying to be here as much as possible to minimize the guess work on their end. I just really wish I spoke Spanish! Thankfully one of the masons speaks very good English, and he has to translate to the lead mason, but we're managing to get our ideas across to each other pretty well.

I asked the owner of the stone co. today about the back edge. He said it's ok if it sticks out a few inches, since the grass can extend over it. But in some areas where it would be too much for the grass to extend over he said they would trim it.

They continued their cinder block work today and started framing up the stairs. One thing I didn't account for was the cinder block width plus the stone width makes the railings about 12" wide instead of 8". So now the steps will be 8" to 10" more narrow than I had planned...so about 34" wide instead of about 43" wide. I think it's still wide enough for 2 kids to pass by each other (when they get scared and want to come back down), so I'm not too concerned about it. Plus, there's not much I can do about it anyway.

So here are some photos from the day...

More cinder blocks today! They've gone through 3 pallets so far, but hoping one more will do it for the rest of the stairs and the waterfall. We'll see though. I'm so glad I was here today to go over the stair dimensions (rise/tread/width). We spent about an hour figuring out exactly how it will be laid out, but I think it was an hour well spent to avoid ripping things out later or having to settle for something because it's too hard to fix. We also came up with a way to build the stairs and railing so that I'm getting back 4" on the inside that I was going to lose yesterday. So now the total inside width should be about 37", which is just 6" more narrow than I had originally planned. I can definitely live with that.

They were also able to get the pipe ran today for the hose spigot on the back wall. That 1" pipe should have come up directly under the slide with the slider riser pipe (not with the waterfall riser), but I marked the wrong spot before plumbing day, so that one's on me. It's all good now though.

Couldn't believe it, but I woke up this morning to the sound of cinder blocks being sawed. We're expecting a good bit of rain this week, so I think they are trying to get ahead a little bit because of that. Anyway, they finished blocking the stair case and started framing the falls. We decided about halfway in today to add a little planter on top of the falls by the slide entrance to help soften up all the rock up there. After they left I sketched up a rough idea of what I think will work. I also marked some cut lines on the left side of the falls...difficult to explain, but basically these lines will help make the left side closer to the tread widths of the right side by making the top treads match (unlike they are now).

Progress today...

A LOT of progress done! I think I see what you are wanting to do with the cuts.

Look at that cute smile! I can't wait to see her doing down the slide! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

She is our fish. Our boy, not so much, but he'll come around soon enough with big sister leading the way. I think the tanning ledge will be his hangout (partly why we added one). I'm very interested to see how long it takes them to work up the nerve to go down the slide by themselves. My bet right now is no sooner than a month for her and no sooner than next summer for him.

I still need to meet with the stone owner tomorrow to see if he agrees with the cuts and the top planter. In the meantime, they were busy today on the back wall and running wire for the step lights. Rain started around 3:00 though. Hoping it holds out for a little while so they can get more done in the morning at least.

Pics from today (unfortunately no camera on the back wall)...

LOVING the rock work! WOW! Will they grout it? I almost hope not or that they keep it deep inside the rock cracks. They are truly artists!

Kim:cat:

Thanks, me too. I struggled for so long on what to do on this back wall (i.e. stucco, stamped concrete, boulders, faux stone, etc.). Then we just stumbled across these little flat rocks at the stone yard and they spoke to me. :) Anyway, I asked them to keep the grout lines as small as possible (i.e. close stack the stones), which they did, but that's a good idea about keeping the grout lines sort of recessed from the surface. It would definitely give it more depth (literally). I'll ask them about that today. Although it's already raining this morning, so not sure how much, if anything they'll get done today.

Intermittent rain today, but they managed to finish blocking the falls and added some more flat rock to the back wall. We're gonna need more flat rock! We also decided to not do the formal planter on top of the falls, but the top rock will allow us to put some potted plants if we decide we want to do that. We'll see. Almost done with cinder blocking...just a few smaller ones to set along the front wall (either side of the falls and slide), then Drylok, then the fun part...set the stones. Tomorrow though, they are planning to fill the stairs with limestone and concrete, then start setting stones there.

LOVE the smiles! I can't wait to see them going down the slide. Make sure to have someon doing rapid shoots of when they come up for air after they go down hehe I know you will be going down with them the first few times. From what you said she will be doing it in now time. Do you think he will slide down in your lap right away?

LOTS of work done! I hope you can find more of those flat rocks! Neat how they found you lol Sometimes things work like that.

He might go down with me or mom, but I think even that will take some time. My wife got an underwater go-pro camera for Christmas so she can't wait to use that.

Cool slide build. It is a shame they couldn't design a way for you to use the space under it. It's practically a room. Nice storage area, pump room or tornado shelter!

Believe me, I strongly considered having a door added underneath the slide entrance. Lots of factors went into it, but in the end, I decided not to do it because I didn't think it would be worth the extra cost/effort especially with so many other aspects involved with this build.

Today they filled in the steps and waterfall and added more rocks on the back wall. Tomorrow they'll Drylok the falls and cinder block the front wall and then start setting stone on steps.
