New pool startup questions

I haven't tested it. It was 0 on Friday. I hung a stocking with CYA Friday morning. It was all dissolved by Saturday afternoon but everything I've read says not to check it again for a week. I put enough in to target 40, although I didn't have a small scale to weigh it so I just stepped on my scale and then stood on the scale with the stocking of CYA in my hand so I might not have been dead on with the target weight.

Just keep at it and maintain the SLAM level as best you can.
Don't give into your better half, because you'll have a real mess on your hands if you let the pool guy take over. It'll come around.
Let's get to the point of passing the OCLT. Have you thought about adding the DE to help out ?

Was thinking about stopping to get some today although I'm not really sure where I might be able to get some. My pool installer is to exactly close to my house and I work in Philly everyday so I'm trying to find something along my route home. There's a Walmart, but I don't see any on their website.

The liner is like a gravel design. So it has various color stone/pebbles in it. I'll post a pic when I get home. Found a pool store on my route home. I'll pick up some DE on my way home.

Make sure you aren't backwashing the sand filter too often either - only when it reaches 25% above normal pressure ... sand filters like to be a little dirty - which from what I understand is what the DE will do to the sand. And when you do add the DE, you will need to add more after you backwash and rinse.

... Keep that FC up to slam level ... really try not to let it fall below slam level.

Trying my best to keep it at SLAM level. My wife and I both work shift work and I haven't been home to test and chlorinate since 5am. Going to see how much it has dropped when I get home in about 30 minutes or so

Ok, here's an update. So my filter hasn't needed backwashing since yesterday. It's been running 24/7. I got home from work at 3:30 and it was still running at about 14-15 psi. So I back washed it anyway and some mud came out. I then added 3 cups of DE in 1/4 cup increments as advised in pool school. Even after 3 cups, it didn't jump a full psi but I didn't want to add too much. So I let it run and began brushing. Before I was even finished brushing, the pressure jumped up over 20 psi. So I back washed and a bunch of mud came out. I then added 3 more cups of DE, and about 10 minutes later, my pressure was over 20 again.
So I'm wondering, could it be that the mud/silt was so fine that my filter couldn't catch it until I added the DE and stirred it up again with brushing? I've been brushing and/or vacuuming it a couple times a day since I started the SLAM, and the only times I've had to backwash that quickly was when I was vacuuming. Brushing has never had such a fast effect on the filter pressure.
