Ok, here's an update. So my filter hasn't needed backwashing since yesterday. It's been running 24/7. I got home from work at 3:30 and it was still running at about 14-15 psi. So I back washed it anyway and some mud came out. I then added 3 cups of DE in 1/4 cup increments as advised in pool school. Even after 3 cups, it didn't jump a full psi but I didn't want to add too much. So I let it run and began brushing. Before I was even finished brushing, the pressure jumped up over 20 psi. So I back washed and a bunch of mud came out. I then added 3 more cups of DE, and about 10 minutes later, my pressure was over 20 again.
So I'm wondering, could it be that the mud/silt was so fine that my filter couldn't catch it until I added the DE and stirred it up again with brushing? I've been brushing and/or vacuuming it a couple times a day since I started the SLAM, and the only times I've had to backwash that quickly was when I was vacuuming. Brushing has never had such a fast effect on the filter pressure.
