New pool owner - Filter leak

If the wallet allows I'd recommend go with a cartridge filter the biggest you can $$ and fit in the spot. The plumbing is secondary as I believe do it once and enjoy forever. By the way the DE addition to a sand filter is via the pool skimmer and has nothing to do with side or top mount mpv.
Ahhh okay, thanks for that info. Maybe it doesn’t matter so much then whether it is top or side mount.

You’re the second person to recommend the cartridge filters to me. I don’t hate the idea but they do seem rather expensive and a pain to clean although I need to do more reading about the pros and cons. For reference, I am dealing with a ton of algae and need to do a SLAM soon. I am just waiting on my test kit to begin the slam so I’m not doing it blind. Also trying to figure out how exactly to clean it while my filter is out of commission. Seems like I’ll be doing a lot of manual skimming, vacuuming to waste and recirculating.

In the long run a larger filter will serve you better so if your budget is able then spend the money towards that.
Thank you. Multiple folks now have recommend cartridge filters so I am considering a Hayward W3C3030. Also considering a VS upgrade kit for my Hayward Super Pump, if it will fit. Just need to find someone to help me install everything and reconfigure the plumbing.

If you want sand, and want to stick with Hayward, the S-244T2 would serve well. Its a 300#, 3sq. ft. filter rated at 60 GPM.
You could also upgrade your existing Super Pump with a Nidec Neptune NPTT165 variable-speed motor, along with the required gaskets, O ring, shaft seal (GO KIT 3).

Thanks for this! I really like the look of that motor. Any experience with “Perry’s Pool Pump?” It’s the first vendor listed when I search for that model.

On occasion, when I haven't been able to get an item through my distributors, I have dealt with Pool Supply Unlimited with no issues. The motor along with the GO kit is about $80.00 less through them.

Oh awesome, thank you!

I am going to buy that Neptune motor. I am also considering a Hayward W3C3030 cartridge filter. I want to preserve my ability to vacuum to waste though so plan on purchasing a Jandy NeverLube 3-port valve. Besides the go kit for the pump, can anyone think of anything else I need to purchase? I think that cartridge filter has 2” pipe and all of mine is 1.5” so I will need some sort of reducer right? I am going to try and find a plumber to help me reconfigure everything. I’m hoping I can swap out the motor myself.

If its not on YouTube it doesn't exist. Many videos on replacing the motor on a Super Pump are there. Also, videos of programming that motor are found there. You'll need a 1/4" nut driver, 7/16" open-end & 9/16" box-end wrench, a hex key (5/16"?) to hold the shaft on the new motor to install the impeller.

Draw out the plumbing. Good idea to keep the drain line. Put the 3-way between the pump and the filter to connect to the existing drain line. You could upgrade all your plumbing to 2” which makes it easier to connect every thing then trying to fit in reducers. Obviously you need reducers to connect to the main suction and return lines if they are 1 1/2. Push the pump back and have a 10” straight run leading to the pump. Use a pipe union on each side of the pump.

Remove the chlorinator. If you think you would like to convert to a saltwater pool in the future, leave a straight pipe going to the return pipe where it will be easy to add a SWCG.

This might be a dumb question but can I swap out my Hayward Super Pump with this Super II and it work with the Neptune motor?

My pump looks quite old and it was leaking from the strainer basket. A new seal and some silicone lube seems to have fixed that but it is so faded and probably 8-10 years old at least so I am worried it doesn’t have much life left in it. This also seems a lot cheaper than buying a complete motor/pump.

If your circulatory system is sealed well, there is no need for a check valve. Does your pump prime in a reasonable time?
Ah okay. Initially no. It would struggle. And when it finally did, there would be a big air bubble in the basket. The lid says to add water before turning on pump though, I didn’t do that initially. And again, it was leaking before pretty badly. So probably user error before.

I’d have to go play with it again now as I haven’t been running it since my filter is out of commission. I think I fixed the leak around the basket lid. There is still air in the system though as I get bubbles out of my return jets. And I know there is at least one other leak between the pump and the filter. And then the filter of course leaks like crazy and has other issues so I haven’t been using it.

Air leaks occur on the suction side of the pump. So from the pump basket back to the skimmer. The pump suction would draw air in from those areas.
Leaks on the pressure side of the pump, from the exit of the pump to the filter, etc will show as a water leak as pressure is forcing water out.
So air in the pump basket is caused by a leak in the pump top seal, or from the pump drain plugs that are on the bottom of the pump basket and impeller housing or from the pipe, valves etc before the pump.

Also, those with VS pumps, that run at slow speed, may have some bubbles in the pump basket but usually clear when the pump is run at higher speed.

I run my VSP at 2200 because I have to trigger my heater, but when I get an air bubble forming I know it’s time for a backwash 😁 I mean, I do trust my pressure gauge, but that air bubble always has indicated backwash time.

Change of plans, I got a few quotes for the cartridge filter install and they were cost prohibitive for me at the moment. This is my first house and it has been quite the money pit so far.

I found a Hayward S244S for $250 that appears to be in excellent condition. It is a side mount like what I already have and presumably won’t be too difficult to swap out. It holds 300lbs of sand so seems more appropriately sized for my pool. I’ll start putting some money aside now and do a complete overhaul in a couple of years and switch to a cartridge filter at that time and then install a SWG.

Sand filters are good. The current one seemed to be undersized and most likely not cared for by previous owners. This larger Sand filter can last a long time if you care for them, backwash as needed, etc. I would focus on saving for a SWCG as that is very beneficial for the long term.

Thanks Herman, question for you and anyone else. Is it okay to use a Hayward filter with a Pentair pump? This guy threw in a 2-speed Pentair Whisperflo High Performance Pump. So I got the filter and pump for $250. The only issue is he isn’t certain the pump works but doesn’t have any reason to believe it doesn’t. Apparently he never used it, it was given to him for free in a separate transaction some time ago and he ended up never using it.

Also, is there a good or easy way to test this pump out before swapping it in for my current Hayward Super Pump?

Thanks again for everyone’s help so far.
