Wow! You've had Pool School!!!! I'm in awe! I haven't had mine yet. I'm sure glad I've been reading TFP, or I would be totally in the dark. And now you are IN CHARGE!!! That's so exciting! Now we all know whom to go to for our water maintenance questions. No pressure, right?!!!

Our pool ranges between 89 and 92. But we've found when it's 109 outside, 92 feels pretty good!

Yes, I've been in the pool every evening. It's great. Tonight we had my nephew and his wife and two children over to swim. And we enjoy the water even when it's warm. [emoji3]

Morning swim was great! Enjoyed spending that time with my husband. I'm reading everything I can about the TF pool way of testing and chlorinating. I am now ready to start adding liquid chlorine. I want this pool to stay clean! So far it's been great. I think my CYA is 40. It seems it went up from almost nothing to 40 in about a week. Is that possible? Our PB did shock it once. I have no idea what he used. And the service guy added muriatic acid once.
Anyway, I'm so enjoying it. I'm not sure I'd ever want to be without an inground pool ever again. (I loved my above ground pool too, though). [emoji3]

The "shock" had CYA in it. He must have put a lot in to get your CYA up to 40. It does take about a week for the powder CYA to show up on the test so that is about the right timing.

No, best to remove the pucks and put them in a bucket or let them dissolve. They will add more cya.
Liquid chlorine can be found at lowes, hd, pool store it is usually 10-12% chlorine. Or buy generic bleach at grocery store, target, wm, it is usually 8.25%. Plain, unscented, not splashless or easy pour. Same chlorine, different percentages.

Janny even if you turn it off there is still water in there and some will leak out. Take the puck out and let it dry out. You can use it later if needed.
Bleach/chlorine-------I get my chlorine at my local ACE Hardware store. They take a deposit on the jugs that IF I even return them I will get back. I have 2.5 gal jugs. They fit purrrfect in my pool box. I use the 2.5 gal ones as the 5 gal ones are too heavy for me to pic up and pour.
Some pool stores carry liquid chlorine. If it is liquid chlorine it should be 11 or 12%.
Lowes and Home Depot tend to store their pool chlorine outside in the heat and have a low turn over. IF you buy from them make sure you check the date codes. Bleach/chlorine will degrade over time and in heat so..........it will not be worth your time and trouble.
We had a member that bought $80 worth of liquid chlorine from a big box store. She gets it home and starts her SLAM. She does not see in progress in her water wellllll ............she checks the date code and it is over a year old! She was able to take the jugs back and get her money back.
Pick the place that is easy for you to get to and not make a special trip out of your way. I have a plastic tote that I use if I have my car. It holds 2 of my jugs. If I have the truck I can hold all 4 jugs.
Make sure you see the % on it. If no % is listed it is not worth your time or money. Watch Walmart as they have a "cleaning bleach" that is listed at 6%! for the same price as their plain bleach that is 8.25%!

Thanks, Kim, for all that information. Much of it I didn't know. We have an Ace hardware store very close to the house. I didn't even bother with them because I figured their prices would be too high. But a higher percentage and larger jugs and deposit return - Even if it equals out in cost, the convenience would be better.
And I'm finding we are collecting a mountain of empty bleach bottles. We have recycling in our neighborhood. We do a good job of recycling everything allowed, so our little tub is full each week with no room for the empty bleach bottles. It's not hard to set them in a bag around the tub, but I like the idea that Ace recycles them. Sometimes I'm suspicious that our recycle trucks just go to the same trash dump.....

Adding bleach.............You can add it whenever you want BUT...............I add it after the sun has set for the day.
The reasons are these-that way the bleach can do it's work without the sun taking any of it. Just think....the bleach has at least 10 or so hours of working time if you add it after dark.
Now I did have to "train" myself......as Tim turns the pump off when he gets home so there is no need to go back out to the pool except to enjoy it.
I put a note on my bathroom mirror that says pool. That was to train me to do my testing and dosing of bleach when I start my getting ready for bed routine. Go out to test and add (I am to the point now that I do not test every night shhhhhhhhh I just add about 1/3 of one of my jugs). When I am just about ready to climb into bed I go out to turn my pump off.
If I had a timer it would be even easier as I would not have to go back out. The pump needs to run 30 mins after you add anything.
Adding MA..........it does not matter at all when you add it.
With MA please be VERY careful!! The fumes are rough. WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!!!!! PLEASE!! Go slow with your movements and use care. I have a plastic measuring cup that is JUST for adding MA. Make sure to turn your face away when you are opening the MA bottle and doing any pouring. I lower the cup into the water and just let the MA out into the water slowly.
Where to add bleach and MA. Add them at least 30 mins apart from each other! They do NOT play well together. They should also be stored WAY away from each other. Pour the one you are working with into the return stream. You should also brush the area of the pool sides and floor to make sure there is none sitting around.
