Hello everyone, I am really pleased to have found such an advanced and knowledgeable community about pool maintenance. I have been following the forum and the website for quite some time now and am trying to follow the various guidelines.

The construction of my pool was completed a few weeks ago and I am gradually trying to set the chemical levels correctly. Specifically, I am lowering the total alkalinity using 32% muriatic acid. When the pool was first started, the alkalinity level was above the upper limit of my Scuba 3s photometer (>400ppm) and now I have brought it down to 220ppm. I hope to reach the optimal level in the next few days.

I have a few questions for you:
1) TFP recommends the use of liquid/drop testers. Do you have any experience and feedback regarding photometers?
2) I am not very convinced about the FC/CYA ratio. For my pool, I should have a minimum FC of 3ppm and a target of 6ppm. Isn't that too high? Are there any scientific articles supporting the theory of the FC/CYA ratio?

Hi and welcome to TFP! So glad you found us. What a great question about the CYA/FC ratio! We have an area set up just for that kind of thinking. It is called the "Deep End". I will pull up a sample of what you can find over there:

You can also do a search for any of Chem Geeks post to find all of the work and science that has been done to determine the proper levels for safe and clear pool water.

Feel free to ask any other questions you might have. We love to help people learn the whys of pool care!

We do not recommend the use of photometry testing. Does not test the range of parameters you may encounter. Also they degrade in accuracy over time.
