New Home -- Want to build a pool

I feel fortunate to have found this forum! After browsing through the postings and seeing some of the great feedback I felt compelled to ask for advice for my family. We have just closed on a semi-custom home from a builder that was planning on installing a pool. We met with the builder he was planning on using and have starting discussing our own ideas for what we would like. We basically want a rectangular pool and were contemplating the infinity edge as well as a zero perimeter as this was a great look and the pool will serve as not only a functional escape from the North State heat, but also as an aesthetic centerpiece to the backyard. The builder argued against a spa, but we have asked for one to be included, but now we are backpedaling from that idea after reading some of the posts on the forum.

The builder recommended the UV/Ozone sanitation system which I get the sense most people are against. Also Jandy pumps.

The pool is 30 x 21 ft (576 sqft) 15,335 gallons.

The total with infinity edge, zero edge and no spa was $135,000. I am wondering if I should be cutting out the infinity edge and keep the zero edge and use the money saved to invest where it counts more. Any advice is appreciated and I am happy to provide more specific info if needed.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

The infinity edge pools look stunning. But from a maintenance point of view, the spillover creates an issue with ever rising pH and if you do not run the spillover the trough can get algae quite easily.

The UV/Ozone, in the words of one of our esteemed Moderators, are all magic and no rabbit. You still must use chlorine to manage your pool water sanitation. The sun provides all the UV you need. It would be wiser to spend the money on a SaltWater Chlorine Generator.

I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School.

I don't know enough to be of much help, but I'm curious what you mean by "cutting out the infinity edge and keep the zero edge"? I always thought that those were different terms for the same thing (also called negative edge, vanishing edge, disappearing edge, etc).

Zero edge can be a 360 degree wet deck Lautner edge like a certain shotcrete guru we know does or a just beach entry..

I don’t think it is a 360 degree, at the pricepoint OP mentioned- pools with those features usually land at half a million bucks.

In my opinion infinity edge pools are more for dramatic views beyond the pool such as oceans, lakes, and drop offs. There really more of an architectural element vs a functional thing for a pool. And as noted above the can create maintenance issues.

I would ditch the edge and get a spa. Most adults and kids enjoy using spas and in Redding I think you could use it all year long.

There are other things you can do to make your pool look nice such as spillovers, LED lighting, landscaping etc that cost much less.

As far as equipment most want to stick to one brand of equipment and automation. I have had good success with Pentair but others like Jandy.

Have you ever been in a pebble finish pool? Some folks like them and some find them rough on feet an other body parts.

Note that there are four different Pebble Technology finishes. Pebble Pool Finishes - Pebble Tec

Your quote refers to a pebble finish but not specifically Pebble Tec.
