New Home, Inherited a Pool. Advice on numbers needed.

Hello,

I recently closed on a new house with a 19x38 inground vinyl pool that I'm told is 28k gallons. I received my Taylor K-2006 test kit last night, and tested the pool this morning.

FC 5.5
CC 0
PH 7.2
TA 100
CH 510
CYA >100 (off the charts, need to retest diluted with distilled water - will do tonight)

The pool has a chlorine puck feeder, and from what I can tell, the previous owner had a pool service that basically fed it pucks nonstop.

My first concern is the hardness and CYA - both of which I understand require partial draining / refilling. My biggest concern is that I'm on a well, with 30gpg hardness (tds >700), so I suspect the hardness won't change much. I assume I can test my source water for CH to confirm with the same CH test as the pool?

I've turned off the puck feeder and will switch to liquid chlorine. As I'm in Wisconsin and our pool season is likely only another 4-6 weeks, should I try to maintain the pool as is, or start to drain and refill immediately to get CYA down? Surprisingly, the pool water looks quite clear, but I'm worried that a bloom is imminent.

Appreciate your thoughts and advice!

Welcome to TFP.

CH of 510 is manageable and not unusably high. Don't worry about it for a while and focus on other stuff.

I would use LC to sanitize for the remainder of the season. You are going to drain down the pool some when you winterize. Develop your plan for how you drain the pool and refill at opening next year.

Figure out your real CYA level with the dilution test and we will give you some guidelines fo the FC level to keep for a few more weeks. You have less of a risk of algae as the temperatures drop in the coming weeks.

When you get a chance Read This BEFORE You Post please add a signature with the details of your pool.
