Washington County, TX
Hello! I am a new forum member . My pool is actually almost complete, but I have a few last details I would like some advice on from the wise collective here. I am sure I will have plenty of water chemistry questions once we get water.
Some background - my husband and I are in the last stages of our home and pool construction in basically a large hay field in Washington, TX. It has been agonizingly slow, but we think the end is finally in sight. The pool construction is a little on the uncommon side. When the geotechnical engineers tell you the site is not suitable for construction (it is 99.999999% solid, heavy, sticky clay) but you do it anyway, and you have your architect and structural engineers design the pool, it gets interesting.
Piers were dug, a mud slab with drainage was poured, and then the walls were poured in place. It was backfilled to the top on the west side, but the board-formed concrete is exposed for a couple of feet on the east side. Landscaping and a fire pit will be on that side. The house is on the north end. If we get tired of the pool, we could probably use it as the foundation for an extension of the house.

The Wet Edge satin matrix plaster should be done in the next couple of weeks. There are very few decisions left at this point, but I do have a few questions.
1. The spa is planned for the same finish as the pool. I have never sat on a Wet Edge satin finish. Would a better choice be to have a smoother finish in the spa?
2. There are no step markers planned. My pool contractor says he usually doesn't do them anymore, but he will if I want it. Are the edges of steps hard to see when there is water in the pool? I have never had a pool.
3. I have finally decided I would like a SWG. Since the rest of the equipment is Jandy, should we go with that brand? I have learned from this forum that we should get an "over sized" one, and I am fine with that.

The original pool plan had a sun shelf with bubbler where the spa is. My husband and I eventually decided to replace the shelf with the spa, figuring we would probably use that more. (I grew up on the SC coast at a time when using Coppertone SPF 4, aka "suntan lotion", was considered a healthy choice. If I never go out in the sun again, it will never make up for the damage I already inflicted on myself). So - no sun shelf, but the top step is about 3x4 so I could put a small chair there with my feet in the water. Doing away with the sun shelf did away with the bubbler, so no water features.
Waterline tile is a large format mottled gray tile, so no bling (sorry Kim!)

I look at all the beautiful pools on this forum and do get envious of the water features and bling and the this and the that. But, we think this pool fits the architecture of the house and the setting.

Although...glass step markers....

If you read all that, thank you!

I have SO many questions!!!! I want to learn how you did this!

-how deep are those piers?

-mud with drainage? more details please

-wall poured in place. I am guessing there were walls on both sides? Do you have pics of them pouring them?

I can't help you on the feeling of the plaster. Have you had a chance to see any in person you could run your hands on?

Step markers=BLING!!! hehe Where will your lights be? If your steps are well lite you will not need the markers BUT to me they are another "safety" factor for that area. They catch your eye when you are coming and going.

I see two doggies!!! I would love to see a better look at the house as well.

How many meetings and adult words did it take to get to finial plan ready to go?

Hi Kim - thanks checking in!

Let's see. The piers - there are 10 piers, each going down approximately 20'. It is my understanding that they stay in place and provide support to the structure due to the friction between the surface area of the piers/columns and the clay. The bottom of them is not actually resting on anything, other than more clay.

The mud slab at the bottom of the hole is a concrete slab with a channel of sorts down the middle. That channel, under the black cloth, has gravel and a perforated pipe that connects to another pipe that daylights downhill. The slab and the drainage help protect the bottom of the pool structure from the hydrostatic pressure of water from below. When it was just a pit in the ground, water would seep out of the walls (water migrating underground from up the hill) and also could come up from the bottom. The house is built on an unvented crawlspace (picture a very short basement). Until a drainage issue was corrected, after a heavy rain, water would percolate up through any perforations in the slab on the floor of the crawlspace. I had my own indoor swimming pool for a while. The mud slab also provided a better surface for the builders who were working on the pool.

The third picture in the first post shows the pool walls after the gunite was done (10" walls and 12" floor). The wood forms were then removed and new ones were put up (maybe 8"? from the gunite walls) and that space was filled with concrete from a pumper truck. The picture with the pumper shows them working on the walls on an elevated terrace/patio that connects the house to the pool. I couldn't find one of them filling the pool walls. A continuous "top" was then poured over the whole thickness of the wall. That is what serves as the coping.

Here is a view of the "guest house" (a dog trot style, 2 room structure with a guest bedroom and my husband's office), the carport, and the main house. The picture is taken facing north. To the east, down the hill is a 5 acre pond. The wall of the house on that side is mainly glass.

I see my border collies did make it into one of the pictures! Love those goofballs.

As far as the Wet Edge satin, I have felt it, but I have never been in a pool with it or sat on it. Hopefully someone familiar with it will chime in.

The pool has 3 LED lights along the long edge with the scuppers, so facing east toward the pond. The spa has another light. There is no light on the steps. I didn't know if the pool would be lit well enough for the "glow" to illuminate the steps by the spa or if they would be in a shadow.

As far as the adult words, the pool has been a lucky innocent bystander. The house (over a year over schedule) has been responsible for the adult words, and more than a few adult beverages. Actually, I can't believe how much I didn't stress about the details. So not me. I research everything to death. The original plan had the pool at 9' wide (more lap pool proportions) and a ledge instead of the spa. Other than increasing the width to 12' and doing the spa, we left it pretty much as first presented. We knew we wanted geometric, wanted an automatic cover, and I wanted it long enough to swim. Not that I currently am much of a fan of actually swimming, as opposed to floating around the pool. I hope to become one. Or, if not, water aerobics of some sort. Running doesn't get along with me as well as it used to.

I am happy to provide more details or pictures if anyone would like. I hope I explained the construction fairly clearly. I know what I meant...how it reads can be another matter altogether.

Where will the equipment go?

I would LOVE a "tour" of the house on the outside...........I so love windows and you have them facing a pond!! Be still my heart!

20' as in FEET?? deep? that is a LOT of digging. So let me see if I under stand whys and whats........the piers are what supports the bottom of the pool really. A "channel" was put under the middle of the bottom to move the water out.

Will you have a light on that outside wall by the pool? If so that might provide the light needed for the steps at night.

THANKS for letting us share in your fun!

Hi -
The equipment is in the fenced area behind the guest house.
I will have to take some photos for you - I just looked and was surprised I couldn't find any with a recent good view of the front. Probably because the temporary air conditioning system ducting is still there looking like an alien attached to the front of the house. And the pretty green dumpster. This is an older photo - I don't know if you can tell much from it. It makes it look like there really aren't that many windows in front, but there are! The pool is off to the left of the house, the guest house is on the left, set back from the main house.

Yep - the piers are 20' deep. The were drilled with what looked like a big auger.
I think you got it. The piers are physically more under the walls of the pool, but yes, since the whole pool structure is connected together with the rebar, the piers do support the whole pool.
The french drain in the mud slab, below the pool floor, directs any ground water out from under the pool.

There are lights in the covered porch near the pool, but I don't know that they would do much to light the pool stairs.

Bcruel that is some engineering magic...cant wait to see the finished product so keep the pics coming!

Wow! I cant imagine digging 20 feet down here! We were in water at 6 feet and that was during a drought. What a complex system but they def seem to know what they are doing and are making sure you have a quality product when they are finished.

I cannot help with the finish question but I would say that marker tiles on the steps and any ledges were a must for me. Not just bc of the bling and how pretty but bc if there is a chance for me to trip or not see something and get hurt, it will happen to me. Also I feel that if this much money is going into something that is being custom built for me, I want custom details. You could pick like a 1x2" tile and maybe even in a pewter or silver color to match the style and colors of the pool and home site. I found some that we loved if we had been going with a more masculine and contemporary/industrial look. Love your whole set up and SPACE. No neighbors crammed on top of you.

Maybe 2 rows of this for marker tiles?

This is the pic I took of it in person. The catalog pics do not do it justice

Bcrule,

Amazing! So unique! I'm watching in awe. I don't have markers on my steps and it doesn't bother me but I do have a light near them. If you want them, go for it but I think you could also be fine without. I suppose it is a now or never decision. It does add a nice visual effect. Of course your TFP water will be so clear your steps will be visible regardless. Even a small amount of light will illuminate them from my experience.

Even if the steps are lit up, everyone needs a little bling, right!?

What a STUNNING setting!! Love the pool design. It's very similar to how our pool was built, but unfortunately the exact details are forever lost with the late former owner. He was an architect and builder and we suspect he managed (and tweaked/experimented) the entire thing himself. It's possible to walk around one wall of the pool underneath the house. Every pool professional who has been here shakes their head and cannot figure out how (or why) he built it like he did. Perhaps because of this good old red Georgia clay?

Your pool is almost exactly twice the size of ours and I'm soooo envious of the width! You will be so happy you have it. I keep wanting to pushhhhhhh out the wall of our 6'6" wide cement pond.

I definitely vote for stair marker tiles. They don't have to be "blingy" if that doesn't suit, but I personally think they go a long way to add to the safety of your pool. I think this is especially important if the steps are not illuminated.

One option that I recently saw posted by Suz (I think she posted earlier on your thread?) and that I'm completely besotted with - are the shell tiles from Lightstreams. They are very artsy/whimsical, but from what I am able to gather, not that noticeable until you're right at/over/near them. Basically they appear where you need them without adding a definite design element. They look like little pieces of art glass flung in a very artistic way - washed up on the shore. Just an idea! Suz can tell you more.

I laughed out loud your reference of "Suntan lotion!" I'm originally from NC and grew up going to the NC coast - and Myrtle Beach - and I STILL say suntan lotion!! My favorite was Hawaiian Tropic Dark Tan. Ahhhh! I can still smell it!!! ❤️ Thankfully I got easily bored "laying out" (as we called it then), so didn't bake in the sun as much as some. Yikes - the things we did! Anyone remember mixing iodine with baby oil?? [emoji33]

I loved Hawaiian Tropic Deep tanning oil. I saw people using the iodine and baby oil but didn't try it. I was happy with my HT. Who used Sun In on their hair?

OMG - I did when it first came out and turned my hair orange. Oh the horror. I did much better with combing lemon juice through my hair!

This is a very cool build! Sorry, I don't have any input on the Wet Edge. I'm doing a pool renovation and it's going to be pretty basic with materials, the only "bling" we'll have is going to be the steps, so I vote for step markers.
