New Cement Pond in Washington, TX

Anyone remember mixing iodine with baby oil?? [emoji33]

Yes!!!! My mom used to do that. I'm dark complected, so I never worried about "suntan lotion". I grew up in Washington, D.C. so as a kid, we were always going up and down the East coast beaches. As a matter of fact my Dad still has a timeshare in Myrtle Beach. Fortunately, my Aunt married a Dermatologist, and he helped us see the error of our ways.

I think I lost my whole reply, so I'm trying again.

Good morning!

Kim - I got a note yesterday that the pool contractor had underestimated the amount of tile needed for the pool. The supplier in Georgia has some more and it should be here by Monday. Very lucky break for our pool contractor. We picked the tile in March, and evidently two days before our contractor went to place the order, someone somewhere bought every last piece of it. There was not a single tile available in the US or Europe. The tile is nothing really special and it is not strictly a pool tile, so somebody could have been using it to floor a whole building or something. But geez. It took over two months for the factory to make more and then had to ship it from the Netherlands.
The plaster is tentatively scheduled for the 22nd, but I don't hold my breath for any schedule dates.

ctrav - Thank you! I will certainly follow up with updates. I always like seeing other people's finished pools.

ShantellyLace - Some of the piers hit water and some didn't. You never know what is going on with water underground. We started construction at the tail end of an historic, severe drought. The pond downhill had a much lower water level during the drought, but it never dried up so we may a small underground spring of sorts working for us. Who knows. Once we started foundation work, the drought ended. We take full credit for that. :) Like washing your car before a rain storm, but on a much larger scale.
And OMG that tile is gorgeous! If I decide on step tile, that looks like a perfect choice. Thank you. I think. Even if I don't use it in the pool, I may have to buy a sample. Mumbling "my precious" as I sit and stare at it.

Razorhog - Thank you!

Crystal - Your pool is massive! I love that you named it "The Beast". I'm glad to hear that you have been okay without the markers. I think it is the fact that I don't have a light near them that is giving me pause. I don't know if the spa will keep the closest light from reaching the steps enough.

Azsunsets - Thanks! A continuous ribbon of that tile ShantellyLace posted would be incredible. And bonus points for keeping Kim happy. :)

Kim - I think those tiles may sear a retina if you forget your sunglasses.

AmyJo - Thank you so much. I saw your pool, and it is very similar. There is a good chance your pool was built like that because of the red clay. Ours is black and yellow, but I am very familiar with yours. Same stuff. Hard as a rock when dry and insanely sticky and mucky when wet.
I'll look for the Lightstreams tile - they sound very interesting.
I was farther down the coast - south of Charleston. I didn't lay out (exactly what we called it) a whole, whole lot either, but enough. Plus my Dad gave up his office job to become his own boss. He decided he wanted to be a commercial shrimper, so I spent many a summer on the boat.
I never mixed the iodine with baby oil, but it sure was a thing to do. I can still smell the Hawaiian Tropic coconut, too!

Crystal and AmyJo - Sun In! Hahaha. I think I used it once or twice, but generally stuck with the lemon juice.

Foxy - thank you! I am so tempted by the bling. And the steps are a small area so it would not be too overwhelming.

Tony411LA - Hi! My brother and his family live in Baltimore now. Love that area. I see my dermatologist regularly now and I sure wish I knew better back then. But I still may have used my suntan lotion so I could stay out longer getting that tan...
And then trying to figure out if white shorts showed it off better or red ones.

Summer has hit with a vengeance. Heat indexes steadly above a 100 now. A finished pool is sounding better and better every day.

Hi BC, Welcome to TFP!

What an ambitious build project. I love folks who say nothing is impossible! The geometry of your pool goes so well with how your home is laid out. My pool will be 12 x 38. (If I had the space, it would have been longer too.) I like bling, so I would say bring it on. I can't wait to see it all come together. Continue to post pics of the progress....And some of the house too!

Hi bcrule - having difficulty linking to Suz' post here about her shell tiles, so will also include screen shots. I absolutely love them.

Can I see photos of your glass tile step markers?

Thank you so MUCH for retyping all of that! IF this happens again look at the bottom of the reply box. There should be a small box that says something restore saved material on the bottom left side. If it is there you should be able to click on it and restore what had been saved.

 on the tile!!!!!!!!!!! OH MAN! lucky break for sure!

oh man. love all the overkill engineering going on in this build! lol awesome! ur waterline tile from above is awesome! love it!

ok all i want to know if what kinda fish in that pond? you guys stock it? :) i know it's not pool questions but country ponds are way more important to talk about! :)

Geez, I'm so late for the party!!!! I've been catching up on some research. We're practically neighbors compared to everyone else who's posted so far. I'm just down the road off of 290. Living in Washington County, you can't be too far from 290 - by Texas standards. I'm an hour and a half from Brenham, so close - using those Texas standards again! I love driving through that area, and your property is a perfect sample of that area. Since 1977, I've driven that stretch to Austin a million times. (here comes the old folks talk.....) Way back when, much of 290 was still 2 lanes and always where it was hard to pass. Each few years we'd get a few more 4 lane stretches so exciting. Now, the best stretches are the big divided highways!!

Your build is fascinating! I think it might even beat the pool built a couple of years back - on a cliff in CA. Of course, you don't have to worry about your pool sliding off the cliff! How in the world did you find all those experts who knew how to make a pool work there? Austin, Wimberley, Lakeway? I'm impressed!

Add my vote FOR the step markers. I don't have a light near mine, but it's mostly during the day when I swim anyway. There are times when I would probably manage without them, but there are a number of times during the day when it is much harder to see the lower steps - depends on the sun, clouds, winds moving over the water. The way I look at it, you won't be sorry if you get them, but there's a good chance you will regret not having them. (if not now, then when you get really old ;-) )

AmyJo took care of you with my favorite trim tiles, the Shell Beach (fun story behind their creation). (thanks AmyJo for posting my pictures!!) As she said, at a distance they would be understated, but you clearly see them when you're near the pool and in the water. I'm lousy at making decisions, so these include all these gorgeous colors and patterns. I don't have to pick just one. They literally make me smile when I step up to them. They are not made to order, so you might still have time to get them if you're interested. Nothing against Shantelly's gorgeous entry, but I have to have variety of color!!!

Well, some of you aren't too many decades behind me! Gosh, I had completely forgotten about the sunbathing stuff. How many times did I say or hear, "Wanna go lay out?" I wonder what my thirty-something sons heard me say that???? And the Hawaiian Tropics Dark Tanning Oil! I ruined my skin, but it sure smelled good!

Does the bottle date me?? Mom wouldn't spend the money on Sun-in for me, so I used fresh lemon juice on my hair. Thank goodness I didn't ruin my hair, too!

I can't wait for more pictures of your property, buildings, and pool! I'm soooo glad you've invited us to your party!:party:

Take care,
Suz

Hi Tony411LA - thank again. We are pleased with the way the pool design works with the house. Yours looks awesome. I love the fire feature by the spa.

AmyJo - those tiles are very cool! The colors are beautiful.

Jimim - Hi! I wonder sometimes how "over" engineered it is, but I can rest easy that the pool will never pop out of the ground. It has been sitting there empty for a year.
Yes - the pond is stocked. At least I think so ;) About a year a go we had perch put in and then bass. We haven't tried to fish in it yet. The herons and egrets have been down there, but hopefully we have fish. We have a mind-boggling number of turtles.

Suz - hi neighbor! I lived in the Katy area for many years, then a stint in New Orleans, then back to Katy, then several years inside the loop near Memorial Park. We are now in the Chappell Hill/Navasota area. Parts of 290 are just awful right now. I think the lanes are a few inches narrower than a car and with the concrete barriers .... I hold my breath driving it.
The pool engineering was actually done by a company out of Brenham/College Station. I don't know that I would ever feel comfortable if I had a pool on a cliff!
Those marker tiles are really beautiful.
There seems to be a whole generation of us sunbathers here :).

Foxy and Kim - thanks for the tips!

Finally have some updates and photos for you. The pool had the Wet Edge satin matrix applied on June 23rd and was acid washed the next day. It was full of water by noon the following day. We are thrilled with the color. It changes a lot from sun to shade, but it is a beautiful aquamarine (at least we think so!)
We opted not to do the step tiles (the location of our steps is well defined by the pool wall and the spa wall - if they were not in such a "contained" area I probably would have wanted some for the extra visibility on the bottom step). I seriously considered upgrading to Prism matrix, but I could not justify the cost. I love our finish, so I am happy with that decision.

We had our first pool party yesterday for the 4th. We used a blow-up slide for the little kids and everyone had a great time.

Yes beautiful. I'm a big proponent of step markers but your explanation seems quite logical.
