Long Island, NY
Hi all,
Appreciate all the past posts I've read through to get us to this point in the process so far. We're in Long Island, NY - permit is in and getting ready to dig in the coming weeks. I've been busy removing an old deck on side of house and swing set to allow trucks to get into our yard. PB is coming tomorrow to paint out pool and talk thru any late-changes.
My draft of layout is attached

Pic attached has our basics from contract. Any recommended changes?

I already upgraded adding heat pump, but don't want to have any regrets for not upgrading other areas... in-pool bench, blue step (white currently included - PB suggested vinyl lined step, but don't want to lose the shallow end since I have young kids), other? What have you all done that is a must in your opinion?
We'll be adding a safety fence (Life Saver) shortly after.
Thanks everyone! I'll be sure to post some pics as we progress.

Get the make and model of pump, filter and SWG. There going to be any automation of the pool?

How many gallons in pool?

Where will the equipment pad be located?

Equipment - I have some more detailed brochures at home with exact models. To be added.
No automation (other than SWG)
~17k gallons
Equipment pad will be behind "shed" in back - see attached with markup

Appreciate the reply. Anything you would suggest as being worth it to modify/add?

Jumping on this one!!

I see they talk about unions. What about the valves? They should be the "good" valves such as neverlube from Jandy. So long as they are not the ball kind from the big box stores. Those will break over time :(

I would love to see where this fun pool will be going. Looks like you have a lot of decks and fun areas in your yard!

Thanks Kim - actually tearing down most of those decks and replacing with pavers or grass to connect yard a bit more. PB sprayed layout today. I will take a picture tomorrow to share. I'll ask about the valves too - great thought.

Here's the equipment specs:
Pump - Pentair Superflo VS
Filter - Pentair FNS Plus (DE)
SWG - AutoPilot Pool Pilot Nano (or Nano+) DN2 or DNP2
Heat Pump = AquaCal SQ120R

We can choose between cartridge and DE filters - the PB suggested DE for our size pool. Open to feedback on that too.

I have a pentair de filter. I like it. I’m happy with it. Easy enough to backwash and recharge with powder. I usually backwash 2 times a season. I try to keep my pool pretty clean. My robot is on the pool every other day almost. So might be why I don’t backwash much.

Why no pentair salt cell for ease of control with your pentair pump?

I never heard of that brand of robot. I’m useless on that one.

Are you planning for pool automation now or in the future? If you are then your automation system, pump, and SWG should all be from the same manufacturer and compatible.

The Pentair automation is either their older Easy Touch System or their new Intellitouch. Pentair Intelliflo pumps are the ones fully compatible and controlled by their automation. The Superflow pump will not work with their automation.

I suggest you consider changing to the Pentair Intelliflo pump model 011018 or the newer 011028 model. That will give you flexibility to connect it to Pentair automation in the future. And if you can get the new 011028 it's control panel can be rotated and even removed from the pump and wall mounted so you can control the pump without bending over. The Intelliflo 011018 pump runs about $200 more then the Superflow VS pump.

The Pentair IC40 or IC60 is the SWG that works with the ET & Intellitouch. Pentair bundles the IC40 with their automation at a discounted price. Pentair also has discounts when you buy multiple products. So you may do well with a Pentair bundle of filter, pump. SWG, and even automation if you want it.

How many gallons in your pool? We recommend your SWG be at least 2X your pool size. The Nano is sized for a 35,000 gallon pool. The IC40 is sized for a 40,000 gallon pool. The IC60 is sized for a 60,000 gallon pool. The bigger the SWG the less you will need to run it and the longer it will last.

DE vs. cartridge filter is personal preference. Depends if you are in an area with restrictions on where you can discharge the DE.

I'm unsure of that robot- does it brush the walls?? My Matronics Dolphin does have rubber "brushes" on the underside which brush the walls as it climbs. That's one less task for Skippy to do and he appreciates it greatly!

How much is he charging for that device? We might be able to steer you in to a better choice/deal.

Here's a picture of the current construction - pool dig was yesterday. We ended up adding a bench in the deep-end and upgraded the pump to Intelliflo VS (thanks adjw22)

Forms and concrete should be poured tomorrow (weather pending)

Thanks for additional advice everyone!

Let the MUD begin!!! Fun times ahead!

Once they get done you have a *job* to do. You will take your pool plans and a tape measure out to the pool. You need to make sure it is deep, wide, long, etc enough. You will add about 8" for the steel, gunite, and plaster. Look close at the water depth (should be in the middle of the skimmer face). NOW is the time to make any changes or tweaks.
