Concerning backfill...The dirt I have removed, as you can see, is good old Alabama red clay, with lots of chirt mixed in. Is this completely unusable for backfill if I am careful to place it and compact it well? Or do I need to completely fill with crushed limestone? I am also going to use the Z pool forms to pour the cantilever coping.

Clay takes a loooong time to settle so it’s not a good choice for back fill.
Here’s a thread on the backfill subject

Understand the settling issue. I will backfill with crushed limestone. Does anyone have experience with building a pour in place sun ledge and steps that are vinyl covered?

Here’s one sunshelf build that I found - not diy but well documented
