Need Serious Help

Hi All,

I am highly frustrated and I am not getting anywhere with the pool store. My first year owning the pool - opened it May 1.
I have an estimated 17500 gallon Plaster pool (just moved here). I am having trouble establishing any Free chlorine in my pool. In the beginning it kept getting a slightly greenish tinge which goes away when I shock it and then comes back. It never smelled like a pool-only like a pond. Up until yesterday, I was shocking to about 20 ppm based off this TFP pool calculator using bleach and then switched liquid chlorine. But I was getting 0 free chlorine even after shocking. so I went to the pool store and they measured my CC at 8 ppm (Free at <1 ppm). They told me to add 16 gallons of pool chlorine (12.5%). I did - after the sun went down. That should bring my free chlorine up to 115 ppm. I tested it and it might have been 33 with the FAS kit (at most). In the morning, it was possibly 7ppm with the FAS kit. And by noon less than 1ppm but I can't really tell because my FAS-DPD test kit and my DPD test kit seem to be getting interference from the combined chlorine making it really hard to read. The test strips (2 different brands) showed 0 free chlorine even immediately and 1 hour after adding the 16 bottles. I dipped it into the chlorine bottle right after getting a 0 reading from the pool- and it turned pink, so it's not getting bleached out.

Today- according to both my measurement with the FAS kit and the pool store my CC is down to 6.5-7 ppm. I still have very little free chlorine (I tested 0 with strips, they tested 0.82 ppm with their digital LaMotte). They told me to just wait another 24 hours for it to circulate but this seems contradictory to everything else I read. They wouldn't even sell me more chlorine, which I think is what I need. But I want to get other opinions before I go adding another ridiculous amount of chlorine.

pH 7.2
Alkalinity: 100
Hardness: 228
CYA: 100 (I have not put any more tabs in because of this after finding this site)

The pool store also tells me my phosphate is high and I have some copper but they said I have to get my chlorine under control first.

Any ideas of what could be going on? What is eating my chlorine? The pool now by the way is crystal clear after my 16 gallons of pool chlorine addition last night. It's beautiful. But I need to get rid of the CC and establish a level of FC.

THANKS SO MUCH!!

Cya 100. Where did that result come from? Pool store? Your CYA is possibly/probably much higher than 100, but you need to know for sure. Do you have your own test kit? If not, you’ll want to get one. TF-100 from tftestkits.net is the kit many of us use.

You likely have an algae bloom that will come back soon because your CYA level is too high to allow for proper sanitation.

My advise would be to order a K2006-C or TF-100. While you are waiting for the kit to arrive add 5 ppm chlorine/bleach to the pool daily. When the kit arrives, run a full set of tests and post the results in this thread. We will be able to guide you from there. Prepare yourself for the possibility that you may end up exchanging a significant amount of water to correct this issue.

I missed that anybody responded to me thank you so much for responding! I just did what you said and I my CYA 110.

It doesn’t seem to matter how much chlorine I add I can never get my free chlorine above 1 PPM. This does not make sense because the CYA at that level should be holding some amount in the water shouldn’t it?

You have something in the pool eating at the chlorine. Your CYA is very high which means you need a ton of chlorine for it to work. I would strongly advise a water exchange to bring your CYA down, ideally to 30 or so but 50 may work, which means about 50-70% of the water. What can you use to refill?

That’s no problem. :) You have a plaster pool so you’re better off not doing a drain and refill. It could hurt the plaster. If your water table is high it could hurt the deck and pool too. So you’re better off doing a no-drain exchange. You can get a small submersible pump and a hose for it from Harbor Freight for pretty cheap.

Read here for the process:

Also, how did you get 110? You have to round up and can’t read between, so if you diluted it and read between 50 and 60, you count it as 60 and double it to 120.

OK then I guess I have to round up to 120......

I like this I’m going to try it I have to get some stuff from the hardware store I guess. ?
In the meantime..... my kids want to go swimming today. This morning I added liquid chlorine since it was practically 0. I added about a half a gallon of the 12.5%. If people aren’t using Tabs how do they typically add the liquid chlorine to maintain the free chlorine levels and also how long do you have to wait for going in the pool after adding it? Up until today only ever added the liquid chlorine at night.

It doesn’t really matter when you add the chlorine. If you’re adding it at a return jet it will mix in quickly. With liquid chlorine you have to add a little every day, maybe every other day. It’s like feeding a pet. :)

Ugh. I added it an hour ago and my free chlorine is at 1.2 and my combined chlorine went up to 4.5 (it was actually 0 last night so this is upsetting). So yeah I guess something is still eating it. What are your thoughts on safety for the kids? It looks beautiful/clean and all my other levels are ok.

You would get a pretty bad smell from the CC and they could irritate eyes/nose/ears. The higher levels of FC will help kill any bacteria. Just keep testing as often as you can (up to every half hour) and adding more liquid chlorine to get to SLAM levels with each test. The water is safe to swim in at SLAM levels as long as you can see the bottom clearly.
