Pool install will be April 2023, but I need a compliant fence. West is open and East is neighbor’s chain link - I’ll install 6’ vinyl privacy on those sides. North side has me stumped, as my property borders two other properties with fences (see photo). Northeast is mostly compliant 4’ vinyl - I would need to replace the gate. I share ownership of that fence, so I don’t foresee an issue doing that. Northwest fence is wooden and climbable from the other side and continues to their next neighbor, so offering to “upgrade” their fence isn’t feasible, as it’s only half their yard.

Options:
1a) I could install 6’ vinyl about 3’ inside my property line (to account for climbable fence. Cleanest install, but loss of land, hard to maintain between, northeast neighbors will have to see my tall fence through our 4’ picket fence…
1b) Do 1b above and replace our shared fence with 6’ privacy fence. Is this even possible using the same posts? Neighbors may not agree, since the rest of their fence wouldn’t match. I could offer this later, too.
2) Have a 4’ black aluminum fence run 3’ inside the wooden fence to fix climbable issue. Make it a flowerbed- break an ankle trying to weed it 😂 Or add a gate at one end?
3) Rather not fence around the pool itself, since the pool will be to one side of the yard and a fence around it will segregate the rest of the yard, but I guess it’s an option. Do pool fences have to be installed in concrete? If not, this could be a temporary permanent option.
4) Other options I’ve not thought of?

TIA!

These are removable pool fences...

Thanks! I saw this, but assumed it wouldn’t satisfy my township code for a “permanent” fence. But now I’ll look more into it, as it could buy me some time for a better overall fence plan. I’m also getting an auto-cover, but it won’t suffice alone 😞

Welcome any other ideas from the forum. I was thinking someone in surburbia also have to have a FrankenFence!

Ask the neighbor with the wood fence if they are okay with you reversing the fence panels. This would put the non-climbable side in their yard and the climbable side in your yard.

What are the minimum fence height and other requirements of your jurisdiction?

That's immediately where my mind went but only half the backyard is on OPs side. So the neighbor next to him would have to agree to get the ugly side of the fence view also. And then the backyard neighbor has the sides of his fence one way and the back the other way. 🤦‍♂️

4’ minimum height. Because their fence is climbable, mine needs to be “several” feet away from theirs based on “topography,” per municipal regulations. I’m leaning toward putting in my own 4’ fence - maybe the mesh one with water base. In case neighbors fix their fence (it’s slanting from tree damage for several years), then we can talk halfsies on a new fence.

As an update, my township eventually declared I did not need to worry about my neighbor's fence being climbable and could install it basically back-to-back, and we put a vinyl fence in the entire yard a few inches from the other fences :) So it's worth to ask your township (in writing) if anyone else finds themselves in this position. NO MORE UNSIGHTLY FRANKENFENCE!
