My green monster

Re: My green monster

thanks for the help folks!!! not sure I would have gotten this far without the encouragement and advice I've received. There is so much great info here. I did a FC drop test last night just to see where it was at, and I only had a 2.5 ppm drop, went from 16.5 at 9:30 pm to 14 at 6:00 am this morning. if I haven't turned the corner, I can at least see the corner.

That's a great update! The last part of SLAM Process, definitely requires the most p.o.p.! :stirpot:

Re: My green monster

Rammy, your initial pool color was brown almost... so you've come an amazingly far way. As they say here: It didn't go green in a day, it will take more than a day to go back clear.

Did you add a little DE to the filter?

Re: My green monster

The sand doesn't really need replacement if you can clean it. One way is to scoop it into a wheelbarrow and wash it down real good.

Baqua products and clarifyers are the two things that really mess with the sand the most.

Re: My green monster

I have to go do Boy Scout stuff this weekend and am still in the middle of a SLAM. rest of the family doesn't know how to run tests yet. Would having them put a gallon(10%) 3 times a day (AM, Noon, PM) keep it close untill i get back? until I can get them properly trained on the testing and pool math app?

just don't want to lose the progress that has been made.

How much chlorine are you adding now? I would not add more than what you are adding now. They cannot learn the FAS-DPD test? It is pretty simple.

Good luck.

I'm assuming you're using the the TF kit for measuring the chlorine so I could see it requiring some knowledge.

Are you losing a lot of chlorine overnight? Adding chlorine at night should last you till lunch and you could skip the AM.

How long have you been on the SLAM process?

starting the 10th day of SLAM today. FC drop is around 2 or 3 overnight. according to pool math my 128oz 10% will add approximately 3.9 ppm (lets just say 3). Pool gets full sun from about 7 am to 5:30 PM CYA is at 40 right now. that's why is was thinking about the 3 different times. If forget to remind my wife to add a gall around noon (with full sun) I've seen the FC drop 8 ppm from 6 am to 5:30 pm. Should I up my CYA? is that normal with the amount of sun I get

they can and will learn it at some point, I just haven't taught them yet and I'm almost out of 0871 (I think that the right number)

Do not raise the CYA yet.

Even if you drop below SLAM level FC you are still killing algae as long as your are above the minimum FC. Just slower.

update:

Didn't lose the pool while I was gone. still at the same place color wise. New laterals came today. so I bit the bullet yesterday and got in the pool just to check out the bottom. I felt around with my feet and am happy to report it all felt normal. Has a couple slimy spots on the walls around the deep end, but it was not bad. Also got a new vinyl brush, didn't realize how bad my old one was until I compared the two.

next up:

replace laterals and replace sand that has been blown out of the filter
continue to brush and spend a little extra time in the areas I found yesterday with my feet

Really great work Rammy! Re: the CYA conversation, adding more CYA during your SLAM means you'd have to increase the chlorine too. (See the CYA/Chlorine chart). Wait until you've completed the SLAM and then look at CYA level. Your pool has come a very long way!

That's an exciting update! Remember to use a tarp or something to catch your sand =) (if that's important) ;)

got laterals changed, replace 100 LBS of the sand with new sand. The old sand was nasty!!!! the bottom of the sand was a very dark green and the water coming from it was almost black. so glad I got this done, wonder how much of my FC drop and CC numbers were due to the algae that was living in the filter. Hayward needs to make servicing the laterals a little more home owner friendly. I didn't replace the whole unit just the 10 individual laterals.

after around 9 hours of filtering (with clean sand) I think I can make out the step a little clearer or maybe its just wishful think on my part LOL

Looking at the tree shadows, the light is similar, the updated step pic looks lighter to me too

Did it fill the container properly? It sounds like it needed a DEEP clean! I would expect you to see some great improvement now!
