My first SLAM + new to TFP

What is turnover in pool water?
It is a mythical need to filter 100% of the water. If you have a 24,000 gallon pool, your pump pumps 1000 gallons per hour, it will take 24 hours to turnover your pool. This is 1x turnover per day. The need to turnover your pool some number of times per day is a myth.

I definitely have heard of that before, and believed it because it sounds logical but once again.. TFP ftw.

The pool is really starting to look good. We got a little rain today (less than an hour) so I curious to see how that may have affected the water. Ive been testing morning/midday/evening.

Should I continue to check my CYA or do I simply go off my initial reading after the water exchange?

Great. Rain effect is de minimis.

How many hours, after you finished and took the sock out was your last test?

I’m not understanding your question.

I just did a quick test and my free chlorine dipped from 16 to 14 so I topped off the bleach as specified in the pool app. My free chlorine level tested at .5. I’m hoping within the next 48 hours my slam will be complete.

You asked about CYA. How many hours elapsed after you took the CYA socks out, was your last CYA test?

How did you add CYA?
Almost 2 years of adding granulated conditioner and chlorinating via tabs in my chlorinator lol my CYA was over 100 so I did a water exchange to dilute it down to 30 to 40.

I did a test early this morning and my free chlorine dropped about 1.5 points. I seem to be losing less and less after each test which is a good sign as the water is getting more and more clear.

I gave it a brush and have my dolphin running on the most thorough setting. I’m hopeful it’ll get wrapped up by the end of the week!

Another update! Ive been testing 3x a day adding the same or less each time it seems. My CC has decreased as well and my midday test today showed 0 CC! Im going to test again tonight > add to maintain SLAM FC > test again.. then check tomorrow morning for my first official overnight test.

Now that the end is near, what factor do I dial in next as the FC will fade to its regular maintenance level?

My TA and CH were both a little out of spec prior to the SLAM, and as I understand it my PH will be out of whack due to my high FC level.

Great!
Are the pucks out of the chlorinator?
Re-read this: FC/CYA Levels You want to keep your FC at the HIGH end of the target range. Do some tests in the morning and and night to see how much FC your pool uses in a day. Take that + Minimum + 1 and start there for your target. If your CYA is 50, and you use 3ppm/day, then MIN = 4, so you would target 4 +1 +3 = 8. Or 9. If you have a big swim day you can even add chlorine during the day. Stay away from minimum at any point in the day.

What were your test results before the SLAM?

Excellent info!

Before the SLAM (post water exchange):

ph - 7.6 - I added some acid magic to bring this down to SLAM specs prior to adding bleach.
TA - 120
CH - 175
CYA - 40

^^^This?

Let's complete the SLAM:
1) OCLT <= 1ppm
2) CC <= .5
3) Clear pool...no alive, or DEAD algae ANYWHERE. Walls, Sides, cloudy water, anything.

Pass those three, then we balance the rest of the chemicals.

I think it’s official! Overnight loss was .5 part per million, zero combined chlorine and I still consider myself a newbie, but the pool looks great!

Nice! Some people SLAM one more day for insurance, but with .5 loss, looks like you are good to go! Is your pool water clear, including NO dead algae on floor or walls?

I have turned off the chlorinator and there are no pucks in the reservoir.

I gave the spa pool and fountain a brush this morning. Maybe maybe maybe one small cloud from a crevice in the fountain but otherwise crystal clear.

I’ll keep the free chlorine elevated to slam levels today just for feel good insurance.

What’s the next course of action to begin dialing in the other water chemistry?

Allow the FC to fall below 10 so you can obtain accurate pH/TA results and adjust if necessary. Congrats on passing the SLAM.

I know it depends on assumingly unlimited number of factors but what is a normal or expected range of daily free chlorine loss?
Once your FC falls to the ideal (daily) target range, we hope to not lose more than 4 ppm in 24 hrs unless there's a good reason (i.e. big pool party).

I'll watch it and start testing once I see FC fall under 10. Can you direct to me to the next channel where I can learn about the proper sequence to balance the water?
