Test kit came yesterday. The manual is somewhat overwhelming, but I'm sure I don't need to understand everything day one.

I'm going to do a test tonight. Does it matter what order I do things in? I was thinking of doing the CYA since that is where my issues seem to be.
Don't want to waste any regents, so I'm a little nervous.

Welcome to TFP. First question is your kit. You did get the K-2006 right. Why I ask is you said it was the DPD kit and that would be the K-2005. The 2006 FAS-DPD is a good kit and will give you accurate tests that this site uses. Start with the CYA test outside with the sun to your back. Do the test, put it back into the little mixing bottle and run the test several times. You can only get a few full CYA test from the 2006 kit. Don't really worry about the book that came with the kit. It is based on "pool store" thinking. Follow the instructions under the lid to get your numbers and then use pool math. You can also look at the youtube channel for help doing the test. The youtube is based off the TF-100 kit. The test are all done the same. The K-2006 has one test block. Half is for CYA, the other side is for FC,pH,TA,CH.
What we teach is you learning :lookhere: *YOUR* pools personality. They are all just a little different, even between neighbors or local pools. Once you learn what your pool needs, you only add whats needed to be corrected. I do not "shock" my pool weekly, can't tell you the last time I had to do a full slam. With that cost taken out the savings add up. For your immediate questions, keep it in this thread. It will keep all your other information here and we can refer back to it. Once you run a full set of number and get a hand on things if you have a new question then yes start a new tread. Good luck. It's might seem like a lot of information but it is very easy to learn if taken in steps.

Thanks guys. I did get the K-2006 FAS-DPD kit. Good to know about the book. I was starting to understand things here (can't say I remember everything), and that book threw me for a loop. So I'll do my CYA test tonight after work and doctors appt. It might be late and supposed to rain. If it is cloudy or sun is low, should I wait for sun to be out to test?

Yes you will get the best results in the sun. Unlike the fc and pH that really need to be done soon after the sample was taken. The cya test does not. Grab a sample in the morning, along with your test block mixing bottle and r-13. Then do it on your lunch brake. If anyone asks what your doing, just tell them your playing Jr. Chimist. Remember that test can be performed from the same mixed sample several times. Put it back in and mix it up then run it again.

Well with the right knowledge just know you can deal with it. I guess you know what your first task is. Don't worry about TA until you have a hand on the CYA and FC. It's not really bad.

Quick update...I was away this weekend so I was only draining so many hours each day. The water is now about a foot below the inlets but with my CYA level being so high, I want to get the water down to about a foot above the low end before I refill. I want to get as much as that out as possible. I have no idea what my underground water level is, so I just keep checking everything with the liner out every couple of hours.

I have built in plastic steps and 2-person spa area in the corners of the pool. Do I need to worry about them moving at all once the water level is down?

Another question...I am going to order a 16oz. or 32oz. of R-0013 CYA regent because I know I will run out with what came in the kit.
To save on shipping, what other regents do you think I should buy at the same time? What is used the most?

You really don't need that much. Once you have it in line. I test for cya at the start of the season and towards the end. You can get refills from tftestkits. I would go on and order the fas/dpd XL to keep you going.

Pool is drained I'm guessing 3/4 of the water. I got the shallow end down to about a foot of water (see image).
I'm now refilling and it should be filled when I get home from work tonight. The first thing I'll do is the CYA test.

You need to make sure all that fresh water is well mixed with the old before you do that. Pump on, and I'd go around and brush the pool all around so things are really well blended before you test.
