I've got two very used STA Rite Max-e-therm 400K heaters, circa 2007. One is still going strong and is in ok shape for being 15 years old. The other is very rusted out and is not staying on. I am replacing both of these with new Pentair max-e-therm heaters (same as the MasterTemp 400k's). These have been really good heaters and have served a lot of year-round time in Southern California.

So, when the new ones arrive and get installed in the next two weeks what do you suggest I do with the old ones? The service company will take them away, but it seems like the working one might have some person-to-person value and/or I could part out the boards. I know the boards in both units are good. I also have a third spare controller board, which is why I know the boards are all good.

Any suggestions? I am in Orange County, CA.

Take whatever money you can get for it.

The boards will have older software. Some of the parts might be usable, but I believe even the Fenwal device has been upgraded in the new models. There are many reasons why a reputable company would take them (convenience for you being one) but not reinstall as there is too much liability and no factory backing if something goes wrong. It would be foolish to try to give even a 90-day warranty on a used heater as the cost to repair could easily be more than it could sold for. Some might open them to get the heat exchanger copper for recycling, but it is a lot of work on those heaters. Even trying to sell the used but working boards would be risky for bith the buyer and seller.
I take them as a courtesy as I can dispose of them for free at a transfer station that is on the route to two of my suppliers and takes about 10 minutes if there is no line.
