Mastertemp 400 issues

My heater was turning on for 10 secs then off. I had the PB come out and look at it. While using the key pad on heater he said it began to smoke.
Options that he gave me were to replace the unit for $4700 or replace heat exchanger, control board and membrane for $3100.

Seems a bit pricey but wanted to see what you guys and gals thought?

How old is your heater? Find the label with the serial number and manufacturing date on it.

Did he confirm the heat exchanger was leaking? It does not sound like he did much diagnostics on it.

If it truly needs a heat exchanger, control board and membrane then just get a new heater.

The pricing is high but that is the PB rate and prices on all pool equipment are high right now.

I am not sure if checked for exchanger leak. Is that an easy test? Any good online places to buy heaters?

Remove the lower bolt on the manifold and see if water comes out.
