I had the pool closed through a company this year. As far as I remember, he lowered the level below the return lines, and also put in plugs removed the pump etc. and also put in liquid chlorine. While the winter has been milder, there has been some rain and flurries. This might be a silly question, I have a mesh cover so I expect the water level to obviously go higher through the winter every time it rains. Are we supposed to lower the water level again? Or having the return lines plugged etc. is enough?

You *should* be fine. Can you look in the skimmer? If so, is there a gizmo or other way to they used (pool noodles) to handle ice? Where is the water level in the skimmer? If it is above the top of the skimmer inlet level, you probably want to throw in a sump pump in the pool and drain it down a bit. The risk is mostly to the skimmers if the water gets too high and/or there is no protection.

I've had to drain 3 times this year we've had so much water. Looks like I'll be doing a 4th drain this week. I just drain down to 2-3" below skimmer inlet and shop vac out the skimmer pots.
