Low NOx does not mean that a heater will last longer. Almost all heaters are designed to be low NOx by how the fuel-to-air ratio is adjusted. Other than that, there's nothing special about them. Most residential pool gas heaters will be about 85% efficient right out of the box. TFP recommends putting money into getting the MOST BTUs/hour you can rather than looking at special heat exchangers (cupronickel) or brass headers. The useful lifespan of a heater is much more a function of maintaining proper pool water chemistry than any other aspect. So all the extra money spent on fancy heat exchangers or metal headers is really a waste if your pool isn't properly maintained from the start.
Low NOx is required for 5 counties in Southern California, and for all commercial heaters in Texas.

Regular heaters and low NOx heaters work equally well. There is nothing special that guarantees a longer life with a low NOx heater. In many cases they all rust out equally well.
