Hello! First post here. Been reading stuff for awhile but decided to join for advice. In desperate need of advice as a first time pool owner. We inherited this pool with our new home so I've been really trying to learn as much as I can but I think I'm just getting lost.
When we started to open the pool in May, CYA was 225ppm and other things were off. We started draining some water right about when we found out we had two holes in the liner which we believe were caused by our kids and BB guns.
it took us awhile to find both holes and get them patched. So then we started over again, refilled the pool and CYA is finally good at 50ppm. PH and alkalinity still high though (we have well water FYI) so I started adding muriatic acid as I was told to bring down the alkalinity before anything else. PH has dropped at this point to 6.8 but alkalinity is still sitting at 160. I don't know what to do anymore.
We ALSO just found out we have ANOTHER hole that I believe was caused by me brushing the pool and possibly something tore the lining in the bottom. We are completely unable to see the bottom of the pool so there's no way we are going to find it until it's clear. So now we are in a race against the leak. I keep having to refill 1-2 inches of water each day while also trying to bring down the alkalinity.
I read on a post from 2007 in TFP where someone said you dont even need to worry about alkalinity until you get the algae under control. Is this true?? If so I sure have been wasting a lot of time and money. I'm ready to start SLAMming thing if I can.
Please someone give me some advice to clear up all the noise in my head with this. I am just spinning in circles and getting nowhere. Also I DO have a 6-way drop test from HTH and just ordered an FAS/DPD test that'll be here Saturday.
Thank you!!
