Looking for smaller pool pictures/ideas/thoughts

Good afternoon all,

I spent some time on TFP quite a while ago chatting with a few members and starting to evaluate options for a pool/outdoor kitchen at our house. Then Hurricane Harvey had to come and change all those plans. Long story short, it looks like we're going to be moving soon. Our current lot is just over 11k square feet and lots of room to put in an expansive pool and a great outdoor kitchen. Our new house will be on a lot that is right around 9k square feet and has a 14 ft easement from the back fence. It looks like that is going to dictate putting in quite a bit smaller pool than we were thinking of putting in at our current house. The area of the back yard at the new house is long from side to side but shallow. It looks like the area we will have available to us us around 16' x 35'. It is 30' from the end of the concrete patio to the fence. So we're now looking at maybe a 10' x 20' pool/hot tub build in order to leave space for the outdoor kitchen. Here's the big question. For those of you that have either had to or chosen to put in a smaller pool, now that you've done it, was it worth it? Do you enjoy the pool enough to justify the cost with it being smaller? As an aside, we have a 10 year old daughter and a 6 year old son that will be in the pool near daily from early March - late October without using the heater here in Houston. We would probably heat it random weekends in the winter months as well.

So what say you TFP gurus? Yea or nay? Pics of your smaller, geometric pools you have put in? And bonus points for any of you with North Houston pool builder recommendations that you've worked with on a pool like this in the past.

Much appreciated in advance,

Lawnie

Man oh man I wish I could find the two pools I am thinking of! One was a square pool that came out purrfect for her yard. Another one was a long skinny rectangle that was purrfect for their yard. They both love their pools and area around them. I will keep looking to see if I can find the build threads for them.

I have an above ground pool. 30' round, 54" deep and love it! It fits my area and my life so it is all good! SO nice to be able to jump into while doing yard work or on a hot summer day!

Lawnie,

Since a 10 x 20 pool/spa is a little on the small side, it might make sense to leave out the hot/tub spa, to give you more pool space.

Have you ever sat in a gunite spa? If not, you really need to try one out before having it installed as part of your new pool. They are not at all like standalone spas.. Standalone spas are made for comfort and function, but not a lot of beauty..... Gunite spas are made for the scenic beauty, but not a lot of comfort or function.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Will tell you in about 4 months! Our build starts in early Feb... apparently. We're building a 3.2 x 6m pool as we want it in our backyard and want to leave a little grassed area for our dogs, trampoline etc. We're hoping it will be enough but honestly I've been freaking out about it being too small since we signed the contract early Dec. Our boys are 11 and just turned 6.

Hi lonestarsooner, we have a spool aka social pool and we love it. It is 10 x 20 and the perfect size. Look at our pool build in the sig bar.

Just read your build thread Brent and I'm feeling much better about the size of our pool. Loved all your photos. I think the size will fit our limited space well and serve it's intended purpose. I love the detail in your design and how it well it works with your bar area. Ours will sort of butt up against a preexisting patio, but nothing will be enclosed. I notice you have a 1.5hp pump, which is what we're getting (vs). I have no idea about equipment but have trusted my pool builder. So far no red flags from what I've read on here. What is your pool depth by the way?

It is 3.5 ft on the shallow end and 4ft 10 inches to 5 ft in the deep end. We wanted a pool where we could stand up anywhere with a drink in our hands.

Thanks for all the replies so far ladies and gentlemen. And thanks Kim for posting that one thread you found. And to poolguy for the AQUA article. We have our pool builder coming to meet us at the new house Friday morning at 10 to take measurements and pictures and work something up for us. I'll update once we get his design and quote and see where we go from there. Anyone else can feel free to continue to chime in in the meantime. :)

Hi Lawnie,

Please take a look at my build thread. My pool was just finished this past November. However, the landscaping and outdoor kitchen are still a work in progress. My backyard is 67’ x 24’ and I was able to fit in a 12’ x 38’ pool with attached spa, outdoor kitchen and fire feature.

Best of luck in your pool build adventure.

We just finished our build. 10x25 no spa. We had a small area to work with after our easements took up much of the yard

My vote is to lose the spa also. It is not a hot tub, and won't feel like or do everything a hot tub does and it will just take away more of the pool space. Get as much pool as you can for those kids to have friends over to play with.

You might find room for a stand alone hot tub after the pool is build, but since it isn't a permanent feature you might be able to fudge a bit on some easement??
