Looking for advice on sun shelf

We are still in the planning stages of our pool in northern CT and we’ve decided on getting a liner but my wife really wants a sun shelf. We’ve had a few builders come out and they all said they could do it no problem. We kinda designed it ourselves, 18x36 rectangle plus a 9x9 bump out at the shallow end (like an antenna on a phone) for the sun shelf. Today, the builder we were interviewing was the first to point out that furniture in the sun shelf could damage the liner. Nobody else pointed this out to us. Now I’m worried about our design. He recommended a fiberglass sunshelf product (I think the brand was Latham?) that’s like a half moon that we could put along the side and have spillover. Does anyone have experience with liner pools and lounge furniture? My wife just wants to sit in a chair with her butt in the water and have a place for young kids to play.

Also of concern is the winterization. Does anyone have experience with having the sunshelf with only 8 inches of water and freezing conditions? My fear is that the shelf water will freeze before the main pool and cause cracking or breakage at the area where they meet. Or do you drain enough water from the pool so the sun shelf is dry before freezing?

There is a worry about furniture and dog nails on vinyl liners. IF you make sure both are smooth then it can work but the risk is there. The halfmoon shelf has been done before. I can't find the last build that did it though :( I will keep looking.

I also would go with the fb shelf. Also water freezes "up" if it can. So freezing on the shelf should not damage anything as the ice can expand. My shelf water level is lowered for winterization but still has water on it and it does freeze. Never had an issue.

I'm already a nervous wreck about my vinyl steps/benches. If there's a fiberglass option, I say go for it! Now, if I didn't have a dog or kids to worry about messing it up, I might go with vinyl. A friend of mine has a vinyl sunshelf and no problems that I know of, but they don't have kids or a swimming dog.
