Leak at pump connection ...

Need some help I am pretty handy when given instruction and I would like to take care of this leak. Seems like there is always a leak with this old equipment lol

Last year, I had contacted landlord and she had someone come out and redo plumbing so I can at least backwash now but of course, another leak has sprung.

Here are some pics and the leak is at the top where the pipe is.

I have never had any luck trying to repair this type of leak without having to take it apart. Adding glue or sealant from the outside has just not worked for me.

If this were mine, I'd cut the plumbing and add a union that is specifically made for connecting the pump.. They look like this...

They have an O-Ring on the threaded side to prevent the leak that you are seeing.

Since this is not your pool, you might contract your landlord and recommend that they re-plumb the pump.

I can do it she lets me have pretty much free reign with the pool (awesome landlord). She trusts me with pool stuff.. IF this house was mine, that equipment would have been replaced a LONG time ago lol

I have never "plumbed" in that capacity so I just need to know what to buy and what to do If she calls that same pool guy out, he will just screw up the plumbing again [emoji23][emoji23]

Where would I find that union? I presume I need to cut the pipe above that elbow since there isn't room below it.

You need to know if it is 1-1/2" or 2" pipe (looks like 2") then you would cut the pipe just before the elbow. I can't see the other end of the pump in your picture (so I can't tell what the piping is doing on the other end of the pump), but you need to realize that when you cut the existing PVC at the elbow and glue the new elbow on, the pump will then be 1-1/2" forward of its current location - if that doesn't work for you, you will need to cut the PVC and use a coupler and short piece of pipe before the elbow to make up the difference.

You can get the new elbow and the pipe (you can get the pipe in 2ft long sections) at Lowes or HD. You will need PVC primer and PVC glue too.

Awesome thanks!!! I can get some more pics for you if you want me to I have nothing better to do at the moment [emoji23][emoji23] I am going to home depot tomorrow anyway for another project and will see if I can figure out the size pipe!

Does this leak cause you any other problems? Just have to weight the amount of effort vs. the need to fix the issue.

The plumbing appears to be 2", but you need to check to make sure.

It really would be best if you could find a friend that can walk you through this the first time. Once you've done it once, it is pretty easy. You could also check out other videos on PVC installation.

My only worry would be that once you install the union right into the pump, that the 90 degree turn above the union might not match up with the existing pipe.. Easy to fix, but hard to explain.. Sigh!!

Lol I get you no, I don't see it causing real issue except the slow loss of water which isn't a big deal for me. We have super high pressure and suction anyway and this does not affect it.

Maybe I will have her call the normal plumber instead of the pool guy who (as you can see) sliced & diced everywhere lol

But at least the heater works now and I can backwash which before last summer I could not.

If we are talking about the solid copper wire, it is supposed to be connected to the pump. The pump should have a bonding connector on the outside some where.

It keeps you from getting shocked if the pool pump has an internal failure. Most unlikely, but good to have connected anyway.

Thanks!! Ugh of course it is just laying there going to nothing and I assume that is what it is even if it is discolored [emoji849][emoji849]

And this is why I tell my landlord to let me handle it instead of the people she calls out [emoji23][emoji23]
