Just shocked pool not sure how to now get it swimmable

Hi everyone,

I'm an amateur pool owner and haven't done much in terms of taking care of my pool, I'm seeking help in developing my post shock plan of attack in making the pool swimmable

Long story short

- Pool was super green
- Shocked and now it's cloudy blue and will clear over the next few days
- As a result of shocking, Free and Total Chlorine is very high, Ph and Alkalinity is very high

Things I also know

- CYA is virtually 0
- Salt is virtually 0 (Salt water Generator Pool
- 40,000L Pool

I'm just wondering what steps I need to do to make this pool swimmable

Should I let the Sun kill off some of the free and total chlorine to normal levels and then increase CYA, then reduce Ph and Alkalinity levels within normal range then finish with Salt?

Should I add Salt first to normal levels, so Chlorine can be generated, then let the Sun kill off some of the free and total chlorine to lower levels and have the generator balance chlorine, then add CYA, reduce Ph and Alkalinity and then add Salt

I'm unsure what are the next steps from this point onwards in my plan of attack of making this pool swimmable again

Hope this post wasn't too long and thank you in advanced for any help :)

First course of action is to confirm what test kit you are using. Hopefully it's something from Clear Choice Labs. Then post a full set of results. That's always step #1.

With a proper test kit, you can perform the SLAM Process to fill & remove the algae properly. Yes, with no CYA you can expect chlorine to dissipate very fast. Chlorine is also exceptionally strong with no stabilizer, so you do need at least 30 ppm of stabilizer to help buff the effects of the chlorine.

Let's just start there and see what info you have to offer. I'll tag @AUSpool and @mgtfp as they may have some local pointers for you.

I'm using a generic test kit from Amazon with test strips

Should I add CYA whilst the chlorine is high or should I let the sun reduce the chlorine level before I add the CYA, or is now a good time to add salt?

Thanks for your reply and help!

You probably know we consider those strips to be unreliable, so I wouldn't waste much time or effort trying to resolve any issues based on those test strip results. I would first encourage you to obtain a Taylor K-2006C equivalent test kit from CCLs. They have good products that are available in your area. Anything you do right now is guesswork and you could end-up wasting time, money, and resources. We don't want that to happen and see you get frustrated.

To manage your pool, and to clear the algae, and maintain proper chemical levels, you NEED a proper test kit. Having it will save you headaches and lots of $$ because you won't just be throwing stuff in the pool, you will only put in what you need. I would order this kit today:

This is a link to the test kit you need in AU...Link-->

Sadly strips can easily bleach out so you really can’t trust that cya number or any reading from the strips. Knowing your cya within 10ppm is the crux of following the
FC/CYA Levels. & being able to perform a successful SLAM Process to completion which is what will clear your pool.
You also need an fas/dpd test to accurately measure fc separately and at levels above 5ppm which is imperative for maintaining proper slam level.
Anything else is just a guess.
All these are in the kit @PoolStored linked.
5ppm worth of liquid chlorine daily as suggested is the only safe solution to keep from losing traction without damaging anything until you can test properly.
We’ll be right here waiting to help you proceed once you have your kit in hand 😊
