Just opened, chemistry readings coming soon - I'm gonna need some help. :)

I just did it. Added, like timerguy said, about 2 lbs. Put a cable tie on it, and put it in the basket. left the other basket (skimmer) empty, just to be sure flow isn't an issue, although I have two main drains too. So I'm not worried about that. But here's some pics, one with the pump off, and another running (plenty of water movement/flow).

I'll check it later tonight to see how quickly it dissolved.

As a matter of fact: sorry, I wasn't wearing it at the time to prove it is mid calf :) nor was it attached to the brick. Since its only going to be there for 3 hrs at most, I doubt being in the way is a big factor.

It's actually working great. I poked it a few times with a stick, and the white powder came out of the sock. Much better than undissolved crystals/chunks. Seems to be dissolving quickly. When this 2 lbs is done, I'll add another. That ought to bring my CYA to at least 30. Then I go from there.

It should get you to about 40. Use Pool Math to see for yourself. I don't think I've seen anything in this thread about you or your pool guy/installer using trichlor pucks or dichlor in your pool-- if they did, it could be higher.

No, no pucks here. SWG system and only liquid shock and then bleach.

I so wonder if my sock is a bit too thick and not letting enough of the cyanuric acid dissolve though. It's still pretty thick and heavy. I need a thinner sock I think. Is this stuff dangerous to touch with bare hands? I need to google it.

You can touch it with no problem. I said to squeeze it several times to help it dissolve faster. It's not too late to tie it to a brick and hang it for the return flow to do is work. Makes squeezing easier too. While it's possible, I doubt a thick sock is causing the problem.

Thanks. I just did a major bonehead move though. Although, if you can touch it without issue, I should be fine. That sock was empty, so I thought I'd just dissolve another 2 pounds in water, and pour it into the skimmer (that didn't work so well, as this stuff really doesn't dissolve quick at all!). At the end though, I dropped the bucket! Doh! Much more on the ground than in the pool, but I'd say I had about one cup worth of granules sitting at the bottom along the the floor where it meets the wall. I hooked up the vac and sucked most of it up. I imagine some is still there that I just can't see, but will this stuff bleach a liner like bleach, or muriatic acid? I see no issues and can't see any granules. "My new pool, you idiot!" was what I thought. LOL

One thing I did learn too, and that's that I really don't know how to get the vac going the right way. I always have to fumble with it a while to get the suction right. Filling the hose is what I think I'm not doing right. :)

Your liner should be fine with the opps.

I used one of my husbands thick white tube socks and it worked fine BUT I walked around my pool with the sock in my hand and squeezed until it was gone. No ill affects that I know of LOL When I got tired of holding it I just tied it in front of the return. The brick works as a weight to keep it in place.

I recently saw in another thread , the fix to trying to dissolve it in a bucket of water then pouring that into the pool--ending up with a pile of cya on the bottom was to get a plastic dust pan and put on a wet suit. Seriously though use a brick and hang it up so that the return does it's work! Wait!! Didn't I suggest that before?? It WORKS, IT REALLY DOES!!
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Here's a better picture. Notice the adjustable nylon string so you can get in perfect position. Also. that nylon string is easy to remove from the sock, making it reusable.

Lol-- I had a reply to that, but I don't want to be banned for life ;)

I only lost a little on the deck. I'd say of the 2 pounds I had to add, 1.5 went in. The stuff I got with the pool vac is in the filter with the rest that went in the skimmer. :) does this stuff leave a mark if it does sit though, on the liner?

You know, I need to slow down. :) I added the other 2 pounds around 2:15. The filter, on a timer, shut off at 5pm. I just turned it back on at 9:30 and it will run 24 hrs now. Does it really matter that it was off around 4-5.5 hrs? I know they say when you add stuff to run the pump a while. I assume no damage, but I just loss 4 hrs of "mixing" time. Yes?

Yeah I figured I'd just run it longer but I was more curious if I could have done anything bad. I doubt it. There's many folks out there that don't care and likely just dump it in and don't even worry about pump run time.

Latest results from today. Getting there. TA dropped, and CYA is FINALLY coming up...I'm going to wait till Friday before retesting CYA again, and possibly adding more.

Date: 4/29/14
FC 2.5
CC 0.5
TC 3
pH 7.5
TA 120
CH 80
CYA 30
Salt 3200

So, seems like I'm getting the hang of it...Thanks to all of you!
