Jandy Watercolors Nicheless LED Light issue

Hello all!

My girlfriend and I just purchased a house with a lovely saltwater pool and I noticed an issue with one of the lights. From my investigation I assume it is a Jandy Watercolors Nicheless LED, but I am not positive. The pool has all Jandy equipment and in my PDA under color light setup it is labeled as Jandy LED Watercolors.

The issue I am having is that one of the lights is not displaying certain colors properly. Alpine white won't display at all. It will display certain colors properly, but others are off. The pool was built by the previous owner in 2021 and I wouldn't think an LED would die that quickly, especially since the pool seemed to not get much use since the previous owner wasn't occupying the home for a while as well.

Attached are the photos of the left and right LED on the Alpine white setting. You will see the malfunctioning one is showing red and blue and sometimes nothing at all.

I have tried just about everything that can be done with cycling the colors, but haven't taken anything apart or anything since I am new to this.
Any ideas?

All that the realtors seemed to know is that the pool company that installed it went out of business and there is no warranty. Would the warranty be transferable? From what I found on Jandy's site it looks like they aren't: "This warranty applies only to products purchased and utilized in the 50 United States and Canada, is limited to the first retail purchaser, is not transferable, and does not apply to products that have been moved from their original installation sites"

That's surprising, I really doubt it got much use. The pool is probably only about a year old and likely saw such little use, especially at night. That is also just speculation, who knows.

Pull the light out of the niche and see if there are any labels on it with a manufacturing date or a serial number that includes a date.

Contact Jandy and make a warranty claim and see how they respond.

I'm able to do this underwater right? With killing the power of course. The manual for this model is unclear about this, but other models have underwater install instructions.

A properly installed light can be removed underwater and there is enough wire coiled behind it to pull it onto the deck.

Allen -- nicheless that is likely not true.
For nicheless lights, you need to disconnect the wire at the J Box, tie a pull cord to it, then pull the light out from the pool side feeding the pool cord in at the J Box.

I would be tying pull cord to it to ensure that I do not lose the wire in the conduit right? Let me try to get a good photo of the light to ensure it is a nicheless. I'm fairly certain it is judging by the light surround.

Jandy recommends an 18”-24” service loop when connected to a transformer. That should be sufficient to pull the light out.

Also note a special lens key is required to remove the light.

I saw the need for the lense key, but I'm certain I have a watch tool that should do the same thing if not better. It kind of stinks getting the pool with no information. I would have had the installer leave that key, but it is nowhere to be found since the previous owners probably tossed it.

I have the same lights, betting they are Jandy Hydrocool and mine are just coming up on the end of the first year and no joke less than 10 times used in that year (I'm estimating higher its more like 5) and we have to have the 2nd one replaced. Yes, thats what happens, they start not lighting certain colors (my blue selection is half green on the one that needs replacing). That's what happened to the first one last year about a month into using the pool and then it wouldn't even light up certain colors. Jandy sends out a rep and will replace the the light. Bottom line they draw bugs like moths to a flame so other than late fall or early spring probably no use unless you don't mind bugs coming in droves diving into the water trying to get to the light. Looks nice but practically speaking useless.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that's the model. That's sad to hear they don't have good longevity. I don't have a warranty, since I just bought the home. The best I can do is try with Jandy, but I'm not sure how strict they are.
I saw these in another recent post about replacements for Jandy nicheless lights and I'll probably look into them more. If they're good I probably won't waste my time replacing with another Jandy that will fail.

So I got the light onto the deck and it is indeed a Jandy "WATERCOLORS NICHELESS LED LIGHTS WITH HYDROCOOL TECHNOLOGY".

I will shoot my shot with Jandy to see if it can be covered under warranty, but I'm not hopeful as I am not the original owner. If not, I will be looking for a direct replacement or a different brand to replace both lights (the other is working great though).

Doea anyone know of a replacement that works with the PDA and iAqualink controls?
I noticed what appears to be a crack in the lens, not sure if this is the cause.

Aqualink supports the following color changing LED lights:

• Jandy WaterColors
• JandyColors
• Pentair IntelliBrite
• Pentair SAm/SAL
• Hayward Universal

None of those have proven to be much better then the Jandy lights.

Yeah, I saw that list. Looks like I'll just have to fork over some bucks for another watercolors.
Any chance that the crack in the lens is allowing water in and that is what is messing it up?
Maybe I can take it out again and dry it out and reseal it? I'm not sure that would be wroth the time.

Looks like a Jandy, and the LEDs go out without much use. There is a new generation out now. Doubt that they are any better. Check and see if you still have the tool to remove with your pool supplies. It’s like a half circle

Captive market. Pool builders keep installing them, so Jandy, Pentair, and others will keep happily selling them at $600 a pop and then sell you another one when it fails 2 months outside of warranty. Want a different light? Too bad, it's not compatible. If I built a pool today, it would STILL get an old school Amerlite niche just with a Sunseeker LED "bulb" in it. Wouldn't be able to press a specific color on the panel/iAqualink/PDA but I've changed the color of my bulb exactly once since I installed it, so I'm not too worried about that feature.
