Wondering if there're any Jandy experts here...

My heater has been working fine. It was off for about 3 weeks while we were on vacation, came home and it lighted up, heated the pool about 5 degrees, then quit.

Here's where its at:

1. When you hit the button to heat, fan kicks in

2. About 30s and then there's a click, and you can see the igniter light in the viewing glass

3. Igniter glows brightly for about 10s, there's another click (assuming gas valve) then igniter goes out

4. Goes through this same cycle again and the ignition module flashes twice (Flame - No Call for Heat)

5. Does this 5-6 times then flashes ign error


It'll do this every half hour or so.

What I've tried:
Viewed through sight glass... can see igniter but I don't believe I have ever seen flame

Swapped out gas valve for a brand new one

Tested with electrical tester as per manual, only odd thing I find is at the second click (after igniter lights) 24v gets sent to the gas valve only for about 1/2 sec, then stops.

Any suggestions?
 
I did clean the sensor a few days ago. its shiny bright like new. It seemed like through the viewing glass I didnt actually ever get flame so I figured it wasn't getting that far. Is it normal to only get 24v to the value for a fraction of a second? I get this when i put my tester on the two wires going to the valve.
 
Flame - No Call for Heat says the flame sensor detected heat before the heater was lit. I think you are seeing the heater sense that and cutoff power to the gas valve.

I would replace the flame sensor or check its connections. You have a problem with the flame sensor.
 
I cannibalized some known-good parts from another heater, and change the flame sense rod AND the FENWAL. and I get exactly the same thing. as soon as the igniter heats up, gas valve clicks, get 24v for about a second, then igniter goes out and i get 2 flashes on the FENWAL. Very frustrating! Now i'm starting to wondering if maybe its the corrosion-ground problem that I've heard others mention. Although its super clean inside I don't see corrosion anywhere.

that igniter glows SOOO bright, is there any way that its heating the flame sensor enough to shut off the gas?
 
Ignitors are cheap you could try replacing that anyway. Do you briefly smell gas when the IGN cycle ends and you get the error?
 
I don't smell gas, but with it sealed up, the fan running and having the vent chimney going up 6' above my head I don't think I would. and with the gas valve only clicking for 1/2 second i don't know if there would be enough time for it to even give out enough gas. The igniter is definitely triggering I can see it through the glass. What would the value be in trying a different one?

It may be partially broken. Enough to see a glow but not enough to ignite. Have you taken it out to look at it? Igniters are common replacement items anyway it would not hurt to have a spare. I have 2 spares.

I don't have a manometer. Frustrating thing is, worked for months solid with no issue at all. I tried cleaning all the ground points and even tried that extra ground wire from the burner flange to the ground on the Fenwal. Last thing I can think of would be to redo my power out from the panel. It's a long run though probably 120'.
 
So there appears to be a 15 second pre purge you should hear the gas valve open briefly to purge. The igniter will heat up for 40 seconds. Than the gas valve will open for 7 second trial for ignition. I would pay close attention to the sequence. But from what was explained it sounds like is a faulty flame rod like Allen said (I know you replaced). Everything points to it, the fenwal your description. There is a way to check the microamps on the flame rod. It sounds like the heater isn’t wanting to go into trial for ignition. I would take another look at flame rod.
