I hit the High Temperature Limit Fault after less than a minute of running the heater. The heater is visibly shuddering and making a knocking sound inside while the heater is on. I turned off / on the power at the breaker and tried again with the same result. It has never had any issues until now.

Welcome to TFP.

Those symptoms are often caused by low water flow.
  • Check any valves leading to the heater.
  • Increase the pump speed if you have a VS pump.
  • Check your filter pressure and clean your filter.

If you haven't changed any valves to restrict water flow and don't have a very dirty filter, the problem is internal to the heater, possibly the internal bypass kit is broken. If you have the Versa-Flo kit, it may have failed.

Seems like this is the likely issue. The water flow rate is great. Pool is maintained really well and always clean. The pump was replaced within the last year. I started to take the manifold apart and noted that the VersaFlow bypass solenoid is what is making the shuddering noise. It keeps cycling within the first 10 seconds of startup. Not sure exactly which component is causing this because it does move. I am going to disassemble further and clean out the coil, temperature valve and manifold to see if I can identify an issue such as any debris.
