Is the SWG flow switch really necessary?

When I opened this spring, my SWG indicated "no flow" when the opposite was obviously true. Water was flowing at the normal level. The problem was quickly sorted out as a corroded telephone plug. I understand that you must have water flowing through the salt cell for it to do its magic. What I can't understand is why you must have a flow switch when water flow is so easily observed! I hope that someone can explain why this switch is necessary and not just another potential source of revenue for the repair man.

Before I had determined that the problem with my switch was just a corroded telephone plug and I was thinking about replacing the switch, it occurred to me that in order to get the SWG producing chlorine, I could just place a short across the connector on the control unit, either by rewiring an old telephone plug or perhaps just shorting the two points with a piece of bare wire. Was this a bad idea?

The flow switch is a secondary safety device to prevent the SWCG cell from being powered on without flow.
The primary safety device is removing the power from the SWCG cell when the pump is off.

If a cell is powered on when the water is not flowing, the hydrogen and chlorine gas can build up and explode.

Plain & simple - safety, If/when water does stop moving, you want the cell to be deenergized from power. If the cell somehow was to continue to receive power with no water flowing, it could explode.

Thanks, Texas Splash! Got it! Makes total sense and I'm embarassed that I didn't think of it!
I'm guessing that my idea of creating a short to fool the generator until a flow switch could be replaced would still be a useful way to get chloring going....or is that another mistake?

Do you have a bomb disposal suit that you can wear when you go near the equipment?

That way, when the cell explodes, you will have some protection.

Are you going to stand by and watch to make sure that the water continues to flow or are you going to walk away and assume that the water will probably continue to keep flowing?

Do not bypass a safety switch. Period. End of Story.
