Is surge suppression generally recommended and if so, any suggestions on equipment?

Trying to get suggestions on if I should invest in some sort of surge suppression for the pool equipment and if so, what kind? I have read some articles detailing the potential problems to pump and other equipment if no surge suppression is used. What is everyone's thoughts? I know little about surge suppression equipment except for the consumer type stuff in the house. I'm assuming this would be a slightly different animal that's installed by the electrician at the equipment pad or breaker box but not sure.

Thanks for any advice :)

If there is one applied to main box, is it necessary for one on easytouch also?

Generally speaking, you want SPDs to be as close to the device needing protection as possible. Will one at the main panel work to protect everything on every line in the house? I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.

As pool equipment and its electrical distribution are typically long distances from the main distribution panel, it would be prudent to have suppression devices installed at your main and pool panel (and any other secondary distribution panel).

Insure that you have good grounding practices in place to get the maximum protection.

The one I linked to above is rated for outdoor use when installed properly. There is also a version that snaps directly into two adjacent open breaker spots.

A properly wired pool panel will have no need for an extra grounding rod. There should be an insulated green ground wire running back to your main service pane. If you are in Canada there are different rules specific to grounding and bonding.

If for some reason you choose to install one it can not be within 5 feet of the pool or the equipment pad. It should also be as far away from any part of the grounding loop as possible. Any electrical grounding wire servicing the pool must be insulated green wire, no bare copper is allowed other than the bonding wire.

As for the surge protector the HEPD 80 is fully outdoor rated. The internals of the device are fully sealed and potted.
