Is it ok to put DE in a cartridge filter system?

You need to SLAM to get rid of the algae and clear the water.

Do you have a test kit? It would help if you could post your test results.

Do you know if your filter can be bypassed or run without a cartridge? If you shocked tonight, it would be good to at least circulate the water.

Is that picture from today?

Ok, that explains part of the problem. The cartridge is a bit small for the pool.

It's OK as long as the water stays clean; but if it gets bad, it will quickly get overwhelmed.

You need a full SLAM and you will have to cycle the cartridges as needed.

DE is not good for cartridges, so don't add any more.

In the future, if the pump goes down, maintain the chlorine with liquid chlorine and brush to mix.

Even with no pump for two weeks, you can keep the water from going green, even in the summer.

I’ll get the TF-100 but what do I do tonight? Filter still needs to be cleaned every 30 mins because of DE. Do I run it tonight without the cartiridge? Would it help if I unscrewed the drain at the bottom of the filter canister and ran the pump to drain some water out? Will that get the de out?

This is my water test from the store today:

Total chlorine 10
Free chlorine 10
ph 7.2
Total Alk 115
calcium hardness 200
stabilizer 20

I’ll pulled the filter and turned it back on. Tomorrow I’ll go back to cleaning and swapping the filters.

I would be surprised if your Stabilizer (CYA) is only 20 unless the pool was just recently filled, but Pool Store results are rarely dependable.

Order a TF100 test kit and read this>> SLAM so you can start as soon as possible. Assume your Stabilizer (CYA) is 20 for the purposes of the SLAM until you receive you test kit.

Time to go to the store and buy a bunch of bleach. Plain, no additive, nothing fancy, cheap bleach. Look on the label and see if you can find 8.25% chlorine bleach. If not, 6% will still work.

The label will show the percentage of Sodium Hypochlorite.

The pool was filled about 3 weeks ago. I’ll get the bleach tomorrow and read that slam guide and get started while I wait for the TF-100 to come

Also the store sold me a bag of stabiler today to bring it up but I haven’t put it in yet

No the oool is old. We just moved into the house in July and are renting. The owners drained it and filled it back up and told us the pool is our responsibility from there so I’ve been trying to get it together. But, on July 1 when I turned on the pump we found the filter was cracked at the bottom. Took 2 weeks for owners to get new filter system out to us and that’s how we ended up with a smaller filter system. We installed that but by that time the pool was green so I worked with the store to get it blue but it’s always been cloudy, I have never seen the bottom. So while I was trying to fix the cloudy water I realized it was leaking. I came here for help and was told to shut it down and see where it leaks down to. I did that and I thInk I fixed the leaks but by that time pool was green again. So I went back to store for more help for that and they sold me DE which brings us to today.

That filter looks way too small for your pool. Your landlord didn’t do you a favor by cheaping out on the filter.

EDIT: I see JamesW mentioned filter size above. I don’t know why the DE is so persistent with all your cartridge cleaning. If you’re planning to live there for years, replacing with a filter double that size may be worth it.

You are in good hands with the above help (Thanks everyone!). While you are waiting on your test kit keep up with the filtering when safe to do so and adding a jug of liquid chlorine a day to keep working on the algae.

Thank you everyone. I ran out and got liquid bleach. All I could find was 6%. I order the test kit and it looks like it will be a week before it gets here. For now I opened the drain on the filter and ran the pump for a few mins to hopefully clear out some of the de. Now I’m filling it back up with the hose. I also sprayed my cartridge with the filter cleaner and will keep cleaning it to hopefully get it back to normal. I’ll dump a bottle of bleach in there each night till the test kit comes and I’ll update this thread again if there is a change of when the kit comes. Thanks again for all the help.
