Is it ok if I vacuum in the backwash mode to blow all the stuff directly outside?

We had some nasty storm and I have a bunch of little needle pine debris on the bottom of the pool. It'll take a very long time to scoop it all out. Is it ok if I attack it with the vacuum attachment and set the filter in backwash mode? I'll need to drain a little bit of the pool anyways since it's almost overflowing.

Not backwash, set to vacuum to waste. As long as the debris will fit through the hose (and not clog it up), it should be fine, especially if you have drain some water out. If your filter has no waste vacuum option, then you'll have to scoop most of it out with a leaf net. Otherwise you'll clog up the filter with all that junk.

Dannie,

NO!!! You do not want to vacuum in the backwash mode.. Well, not unless you want to fill the inside of your DE grids with junk you will never get out!!!

One thing you could do, is take the grids out and then run the filter in the backwash mode.. Not sure it would be worth the effort, but it is an option..

Either way it's a moot point. Even if you had a waste function, your pump basket will just clog up in no time, and you'll be cleaning out that basket every few minutes. Best best is one of those attachments that kimkats mentioned, or scoop most of it out first.

Try to catch that stuff in the skimmer basket and as a backup, the pump strainer. You don't want anything large getting past those barriers. Hairnet or knee-high in the skimmer basket can make it easier/quicker to get rid of the stuff, and keep more of the junk out of the filter.
